Apple has implemented a standard way to deal with tapeless media and left it up to the camera vendors to implement their import method

I am sure we would all like to have Mxf straight in fcp but it\’s a QuickTime editor

if vendors choose to be half baked in their implentation of log and transfer and others can do fine it is good to question why

maybe Sony liking tape and sales around this explains their slower and more flaky implementation of tapeless workflows shy else have decks that are basically just network drives with a video interface for inputting tapeless

I can understand tapeless feels like a new step for some but it is the future isn\’t it like tape doesn\’t make sense though

not about XDCAM HD but still relevant findings

i have found that the batch recapture using sony xdcam ex material is also not ideal

it cannot find the reference like P2 material to UMID and so cannot recapture using log and transfer, making XDCAM ex useless for offline to online workflows using media manager and reconform

a lot of people edit on less than ideal machines for HD and expect to be able to work with the material helping them out isnt helped when the reconform wont work (unless dealt with like tape) and when the media manager does a poor job of downconverting material if only SD material is needing to be delivered (bad aliasing on all projects shot xdcam ex as far as I can see)

not sure if this is a rant at apple or more at the shoddy way sony deals with tapeless and over sharpening in the XDCAM ex camera

I think this is very very interesting

If there is a touch screen controller coming out in the next few years, this kit could be very important, it frees programs like Color from ethernet connections or slow USB for control surfaces and would lead to many virtual control surface possibilities

also if this becomes a standard I think the hard drives we may all be buying in the future can be sitting somewhere remotely very easily with the long runs of cable

plus one standard to rule them all sounds like bliss, bit like that elusive mobile charger that works on all phones

seems optical fibre is coming to the masses, blackmagic optical SDI kit is doing now as well, maybe time to take a good look

as a pro apps trainer I point people working with leopard to the help search box (like spotlight but for apps)

this is a great way to find out shortcuts, just type in and then rollover the search results for menu items, it delves in the menus and then highlights to item

also a good tip when trying to learn FCP shortcuts is to put a new button on the timeline each week, then roll over that button and find out its shortcut

i second Canon as being a good choice

why HD though it may be that if you looking for cheap kit for making DVDs that an SD camera fits much better to your workflow

I found the XM2 to be a very nice piece of kit, clean images and with an XLR adapter you get decent sound

spend your money on the kit like good mics and tripods as well, it will make the video look a lot better

maybe you should add a little white cow on that frame!
might get a little laugh from the technicians

I have been using colour bars on 1 frame for the past few weeks
all you need is something which is noticeable compared to the black frames around it. this was to check sync on upconverted SD to HD material (lots of frame delays can happen with upconversion. a pop 2 sec before programme start can be used, I know an audio mixer friend who says 10seconds. they have a nice explanation as well in the new
workflow manual.pdf on the apple support site

and a beep on every single channel of audio which is being used at the hz rate you have been asked for

when I have been checking synch I also found outputting a countdown clock and asking a Kona card to output quicktime timecode overlays was useful as I could see exactly from the tape how many seconds it was off, it is useful to recapture from the tape to properly check this however

you can also also use chicken of the vnc if connecting on a mac or realvnc on a pc

problems you may have if accessing remotely would be bandwidth not good for editiing and port forarding addresses and firewalls may get in the way

plus it aint that secure opening a machine to the world

think its worth saying that passing the exam without going on a class isnt an easy task unless you have been working with all the features of final cut pro for at least a few years

you will need to read the literature thoroughly and practice, this is what they test you on, and its very particular in how they test you

I am an apple pro trainer in both final cut pro and motion

I would throughly advise people for certain classes like the motion class to attend as some of the topics like 3d compositing can be really tricky to figure out from a book
