Apparently after the FCPX install, it’s necessary to launch and then quit Motion 4 (that’s the old 2009 Motion, NOT the new one) BEFORE launching any of the other old Studio apps.

The answer was yes, the HDLink Pro 3D DisplayPort works perfectly with my JVC with both BMD’s recommended Monoprice Displayport to DVI-D adapter, and a cheap DisplayPort to DVI-D cable from Amazon.

Which begs the question, who *wouldn’t* be better off buying the DisplayPort model of the HDLink over the DVI-D model?

Ah, yes. Didn’t realize the 5770 was a 2-slot card. The 3870 is single, though, and seems to be working well.

After checking the actual wattages of the cards, I just bought a $10 PCI-e Y-splitter from NewEgg to squeeze both a GTX 285 and my old ATI 3870 in my 2008 Mac Pro.

My experience of the GT120 was awful. Although OK for Resolve, the overall Mac GUI was jumpy and laggy, Photoshop lagged, etc. Obviously, if you have a dedicated machine, then maybe that’s a risk you don’t want to take, but nothing bad has happened yet!

I may also return the GT120 for an ATI 5770, which has the same power draw than the older 3870 for twice the power (I still use Color on the machine while I’m learning Resolve).

The driver for the SiI3124 and SiI3132 is incompatible, and causes kernel panics if left installed. This means any eSATA cards using that driver (in my case a CalDigit Fasta-4e for the S2VR Duo) won’t currently run under Snow Leopard.

Neat Video from neatvideo.com is truly outstanding. (Though they could seriously do with updating their website examples, which don’t give a real idea of its power.)

It’s a plug-in for After Effects (which I haven’t tried) and the open-source VirtualDub (which I have), amongst others. The downside is that it’s currently only available for Windows (Mac version in the works apparently).

That said, if you have Intel machines, it works fine in Parallels, etc. We had to do some e x t r e m e noise reduction on HVX200 footage shot at night with way too much gain. I really thought it might be unsalvageable. The mixed-platform workflow was tricky (with VirtualDub/Windows/Mac codec issues: we ended up creating IFF image sequences of the shots) but the results were absolutely amazing.

Spend some time learning the advanced interface, and you’ll get results you wouldn’t believe possible.
