All sage advice – unfortunately too late. As I read it, you’ve already off-lined this edit using the DV tapes, right? So, redubbing won’t work, unless you go back to the start and replace all your media, realign it all etc.

Not all DV decks have a TC input, but if you’re having dubs made for an offline, there’s no point to them at all if they don’t. As someone else pointed out, rushes will almost always have timecode breaks, whenever the camera operator checks a take for example. If your rushes consist of a single take of an interview/concert etc. then you might have better luck. Even one small break will render the entire method they suggest irrelevent.

I don’t know how you can tell FCP to differentiate betweem VITC and LTC, nor how it can perform this ripple effect that the dubbing house mentions. They don’t even know for sure (and it’s pretty unlikely) that the VITC was transferred between the dubs – it’s encoded on certain lines (usually 19,21 or 21,23) on the top of the frame, from memory DV is different, and the Beta VITC may well have been blanked.

Perhaps you should go back to them and suggest that unless they can give you the exact method for what they are suggesting, you will have to take action against them for the extra work they have created. The fact that you were not aware of this issue before hardly absolves them of guilt for not pointing it out earlier if they knew what they were making the copies for.

I understand that DVCProHD is resized by hardware on BM and AJA cards, so it’s possible that FCP needs the card present when re-encoding for export. Only a wild guess, but I know that the AJA card does up-rezzing on DVCProHD horizontally in order to speed render times. Perhaps that’s what the error message is refering to…

May 1, 2007 at 10:31 pm in reply to: Octocore configuration

[Jeff Carpenter] “C) Personally, I went with the quad-core instead of the octo-core. Why? Well you’ll save $700 and the difference in your editing will be zero. The 2 times you’ll notice a differnce is when you render and when you compress for DVD or the web. So it comes down to your work. Do you do 2 to 3 hour event videos? Half hour shows? 30 second spots?”

I see where you’re coming from Jeff, but is $700 such a lot of money in a Pro setup for a system that IS faster – albeit not twice as fast? Also, the info we have so far on ProRes 422 suggests that rendering scales with processor cores, so it’s POSSIBLE that the octo-core is quite a bit quicker in this new format. We’ll wait and see, obviously, but it would weigh heavily on my mind if I were buying for HD at this particular moment (oh – I am buying..)

[Jeff Carpenter] “Remember, with Final Cut you’ll get good real-time previews without having to render everything”

Not once you start applying decent filters (other than CC). I think render times have a real effect on what you can work with filters-wise. Sometimes it’s not worth the wait to see what effect a filter has, so it gets dropped. I think the RT elements of FCP are overplayed – only good for basic motion and basic filters.

Just my personal perspective – like I say, see where you’re coming from…

  • [walter biscardi] “We did a Dual Layer disc two years ago… “

I’ve delivered DVDs for authoring on DVD-R 9’s recently – the availability of dual layer media and writers means most duplicators can take a DVD as the master, and DVD SP will allow you to create it and deal with the layer break itself. Get’s rid of all that nasty DLT nonsense…

I got the impression the question was more in the vein of “how do I get this movie to MPEG-2 for DVD creation”. Otherwise the answer is going to be a really long one.

You could try one of the many ‘scan lines’ filters that are out there – or just make a series of horizontal lines in photoshop and use it as a matte – it’s just a set of lines to give the impression of tv scan lines. Soften it with a little blur and you’re good.

You might want to try the DVD Studio Pro forum if you’re looking for specific advice on compression settings. Are you looking for general advice on exporting using compressor?

As discussed in previous post, you may also ‘bodge’ this by nesting the audio and adjusting the levels on the nested sequence. Gives you another 12db to play with!
