Hello William and all others.
When reading this thread a thought came into my mind about why video did not work as a replacement for film 10 years ago: I think the worst thing was the smear. (The smear is the “light beam” going up and down from a bright light in the old video.) The very best ccd´s and now in the EX1/3 cmos sensor has “no” smear. Now the picture is more “film” like in that way that it is clear and every part of the picture is undependant or the rest.

The resolution of the FX1 is on the ccd chip 960×1080 then converted to 1440×1080 hdv format, interlaced. the “progressive” mode is 960×540 fron chip converted to 1440×1080…
Regarding this forum: Only good thing with FX1 compared to EX1 is the ccd non rolling shutter… but I guess that most of us accepts that compared to all other better performances from the EX1.

why do you have crc on? I have never seen any error. What happens when it appears?
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-Z31WN and when I do a drag and drop of the BPAV directory to the internal hard drive it starts on unloading the SxS card at 100MB/s (I guess into the RAM memory), then it drops down to 34MB/s giving 16min for a full 32GB card. The hard drive is capable of 80MB/s. If it was possible to lock the system to only handle the transfer it should transfer 32GB in less then 7minutes.
Maybe Sony would think about it. The cheap SD card solotion whould then be (a little) less interesting.
We need a direct drive to drive transfer mode, I think.
But anyway, the Express port is still x2 of the effective USB speed…

A suggestion from another “tester”.
1. Do not use Full Auto Mode!
2. Gain 0dB
3. 1080/25p or 30p
4. use a Picture Profile.
5. White Preset White: 6500K
6. Detail Setting On, Level +10
7. Gamma Level -4, Select CINE2
8. Black -3
rem1: p7 I haveused Cine2 a lot and found it very good for sunny weather. The auto iris do not work with cine2. you have to use the historgram and brightness display.
rem2: p8 Black -3 On my EX1 fully closed iris gives +3% exposure!
rem4: For sunny days I use no ND, shutter 1/2000s and iris 4-5.6! It gives a strobe effect but every frame is rasor sharp.
But that was for other scenes in China!

I did go to Africa on a filming trip two month ago and invested in a Sony vaio VGN-Z31WN. A very nice laptop 1,5kg with a built in 320GB harddrive. and a express card slot. It reads the card 2-3GB/min. The harddrive is 80MByte/sec=4,8GB/min but there is always an overhead. (Maybe there is ways to improve the average speed?) Short files are read into the RAM memory with the SxS card speed of 100MByte/sec! that is impressive… 20x real time! With this PC you can also start editing already in the field. Or at least look at the result. With the Sony ClipBrowser it is easy to look to single scenes. And show people around you… But with PC you will keep to Edius or some other PC software. A Macbook pro is the same a guess for FCP guys. Actually this is why I use real SxS cards and not the cheaper solution. It is much faster in data transfer in the field.

Hi Nick and all,
It took me a couple of times of looking before I saw what I think you mean. Especially on the “blue stands” you can see a “compression” or distorted height due to the rolling shutter in combination with the fast movement of the hand held camera. You can see the same in the original pictures also but not so obvious because the object is moving. The rolling shutter is making the picture to “lean forward” when panning (and leaning backwards when object is moving fast). And when moving up and down you will compress or expand the picture in height. (Maybe my English is not correct…)

I did see that you asked if this problem is solved in this old thread. I think Tom Davids comment on full auto is right. I did buy the EX1 myself now in March and it gives tremendous nice pictures if you use it right. And with very low noise. But in low light with lots of gain you need to reduce the sharpness. With standard settings and +18dB gain, the EX1 is mush worse than FX1/Z1. But in normal light… Its very nice.

Strange. I just checked my EX1 LCD scren and it showes exactly the same as recorded? (Bought in March 2009.)

If you have the money: go for an EX1. The picture is so much better than in the Z1. I have had the FX1 sins 2004 and did buy an EX1 this year… And it takes all formats. and does it much better.
