Yes you can go straight from 1.02 to 1.30
I did it already with no problems. Just follow the instructions that you are getting from the Sony software during the upgrade. Read the PDF file instructions that came with the 1.30 zip file -
Just last week I’ve upgraded EX3 with V1.02 to the latest 1.30 But remember, only the version V1.30 is safe to be upgraded to from any other version. You have to be very patient. The upgrade from 1.02 lasts for at least 15 minutes in two stages and at some point between two stages requires a restart of the camera. It is important to follow the instructions on the screen. If it says “Turn the camera off and wait 30 seconds” between two stages. Turn the camera off (do not remove battery at that point) use the clock to count 30 seconds. Then turn the camera On and click the OK button to run the second stage of the upgrade.
The restart of the camera between two stages is the only time where you have to turn the camera off and On. DO NOT turn the camera off for any other reason until you see the message “The upgrade is complete, press Exit button to exit the upgrade” on your computer screen (even if the screen doesn’t show any progress for several minutes). If you have more questions post it here I will be glad to answer. I have upgraded at least six EX3 cameras from different versions to the latest 1.30 without problems. In some cases with higher versions, the upgrade lasts 3-5 minutes.
Remember:
– DO NOT use the USB port located on the side of the camera for upgrade. The right USB port needed for the upgrade is located on the bottom of the camera underneath the shoulder mount behind the small plastic piece. You will need a screwdriver in order to remove that plastic piece.
– Make sure you plug the USB right way.
– The Turn On/Off button is the only button on the camera used during the upgrade. -
This is official. I called Sony today, they’ve confirmed again that it’s completely safe to upgrade the EX3 camera to 1.30 (latest firmware) from any other version including 1.02. 1.03 and 1.04. I did the upgrade by my self, straight from 1.02 to 1.30 without problems. I was using the iMAC 27″. Make sure you have fully charged battery, and AC adapter connected to the camera. Also make sure you are using the right USB port, which is found on the bottom of the camera underneath the shoulder pad. You will need a screwdriver to remove the plastic cover to get the USB port exposed. Follow the instructions given by the VersionUp tool software. At one point you will need to turn the camera off for 30 seconds (without removing the battery or AC cable) Make sure you don’t move the On/Off switch accidentally to the VTR position while turning the camera Off.
Once it says the upgrade is complete, turn the camera off remove USB cable, remove the battery and disconnect the cable. Then put the battery back in, and turn the camera On. -
Ian,
Just one more time, I have 1.02 version, so I can go straight to 1.30
I have updated several of EX3 cameras to 1.30, but this is the first one with 1.02 -
Ted,
Did the upgrade from 1.02 to 1.30 worked for you? -
Julian,
Thank you, I solved the problem by my self.
Ben -
My last post was only for people who already tried to upgrade and got into a problems. If you are just about to upgrade the firmware on your camera, remember DO NOT go straight from anything less than 1.11 to 1.26. and DO NOT use MAC for upgrading.
Just to add a file name for those two upgrades I mentioned in my last post. Remember to do these in order: first> PMW-EX1_1.10_0530.zip,
then > PMW-EX1_1.11_0531.zip -
Good news.
I tried to upgrade from 1.03 to 1.26 last night using MAC and I got the dead camera at the end. Don’t be discouraged, the camera is not dead, it still can communicate with the computer. You just have to find the right firmware. I was able to turn On the camera again, by running 1.10 firmware, after which the camera showed the old 1.03 version. I wasn’t able to read any cards, because of the E-13050 error. After that I started a new firmware upgrade using 1.11 firmware file. This can be find online. After that the camera finally showed a new 1.11 version and I was able to use the cards too. The most important thing “DO NOT use the MAC computer for upgrade”. Use Windows and be patient. I used small toshiba tablet with WIn7. Trying a couple of times is not going to make the things worst, since you already had a practically dead camera. Now you are going to ask if I am going to upgrade to 1.26. The answer is NO. This will be last update done by me on Sony cameras. And this will be last Sony camera I have ever purchased. -
Julian ,
I would appreciate the links to the files. I have 1.03 currently running on my camera. Could you please send me your link. I tried to upgrade straight from 1.03 to 1.26 and now I have e-13050 error every time I puit the sxs card inside. I would like to go back to 1.03 and then send it to sony to do the firmware update to 1.26
