  • Hi , I have a Decklink HD Pro card with breakout cables that I currently run on Mac Quad 3GHz Intel Xeon. The system works fine with 10.5.8 and FCP 7.0 (also works with FCP 6)

I might be interested in selling it for about $600. (Original price $1200)

John, I teach FCP to a lot of professionals and this gets raised all the time. Bret, I totally understand what you are saying. FCP text does behave like a progressive, square pixelled graphic in a interlaced environment. This is very different from the way Chyron and other made for video text generators work. So my point is that while it may be fine for YouTube videos, its a problem for professional broadcast use.

Thanks for the response Bret. Why then if I create a text clip in the viewer and edit it into an interlaced SD sequence, does the clip remain a square pixel non-interlaced clip, as indicated by the item properties? Also, when I screen text generated in FCP on an interlaced monitor it strobes. I understand that type is vector originally, but FCP creates a square pixel progressive scan clip out of it. Remember, text is computer generated, hence progressive scan, and I don’t see where bringing it into an interlaced sequence changes that…

Thanks Alan. To an old school editor like me it seems we are asking consumer monitors to do a lot of behind the scenes work. Which is why these days what you see is never what you get. 🙂

You can render your sequence prior to playing it back. Also go into your RT settings (drop down menu at left of Timeline) and set it to Unlimited / Dynamic frame rate / Dynamic playback

Alan is right about the pixel sizes. This will impact how your image displays. Not sure why you are using 2 settings? What do you mean? Are you rendering and then re-importing?

You should find a sequence setting that displays your movies correctly, but be aware that when you export at ‘Current Settings’ it might look different depending on the monitor you are watching it on. What is your final output and display device? DVD? Bluray? SDTV? Web…

    Thanks David.

My follow up question would be since the card paints the images does the card impact the way monitors behave? For example how does a progressive scan monitor display interlaced video and vice versa?

    Thanks!

    Thanks Alan, great answer.

I do note that you indicate that certain FXPlug filters do depend on the graphics card performance. So my experience/ instinct was right in a sense because being a motion designer I use filters often. I had noticed performance issues, which now I realize are filter related.

I do agree most performance problems are hard disk related.

    Thanks again!
