I don’t know what all of them will be, but I can confirm some. They said supported frame rates will include 1, 12, 18, 22, 24, 30, 36, 48, and 60. There will probably be more, but those are the ones that Jan confirmed for us as definitely being present.

I’m definitely not mistaken, my source is an interview with Jan Crittenden at ResFest L.A., where Jarred Land and I had a chance to interview her at length and confirm several issues about the camera (including revealing what some of the variable frame rates will be, etc). One “revelation” that occurred in that interview is to confirm that direct camera control of external drives (for offloading data from P2 cards, not for streaming) is being implemented through 1394/firewire. We had believed for months that the camera would use the firewire port for streaming (AV/C device control), and the USB2 port for offloading (SBP2 protocol). It turns out that in the final version, both AV/C and SBP2 are being implemented through firewire/1394. The USB2 port is now used pretty much only for connecting the camera to a PC (and in doing so, the camera shows up on the desktop as an external hard disk).
So — to reiterate: if you record footage on the P2 cards, you can plug in an off-the-shelf firewire hard disk and the camera itself can offload the data from the P2 cards to the external drive. THe camera cannot directly record live footage onto the external hard disk; it needs to be recorded onto P2 cards first. But once it’s recorded, the camera can control an external hard drive to offload the data from the cards to the drive.
There were other tidbits revealed; one of the most interesting was that the $9995 two-8gb P2 bundle may not be the only bundle offered. We didn’t get 100% confirmation, but they’re considering offering a bundle that includes two 4gb cards along with the already-announced configurations (no cards: $5995, cam+two 8gb: $9995). This new bundle may carry an MSRP around $7490, but Jan would not confirm pricing, nor would she officially announce such a bundle yet. But I can tell you it’s under strong consideration.

On other forums many people have reported that the rebate checks arrived, but that it took a while for the other goodies (box of tapes, big battery) to be sent. But there are numerous reports that they’re actually arriving now…

You don’t need to go through any of those hoops. The camera includes the ability to do exactly what you’re asking: you can plug in any firewire drive (not USB2, but 1394 firewire) and the camera itself will handle controlling the drive and offloading the contents of the P2 card onto the drive.
You don’t need a laptop or a firestore or any of that stuff. If you shoot onto P2 cards, and then plug in a firewire drive, you can offload the P2 card contents onto the firewire drive. No extra equipment necessary.

If the package you receive includes the DVX Book/DVD and the Magic Bullet Editors software in the box, then there’s a pretty good chance it’ll qualify for the rebate.
If it doesn’t have one or the other of those items in the box, then there’s no chance it will qualify.
You can find out pretty quickly by going to Panasonic’s site and applying for the rebate on-line; it’ll tell you if you have an invalid serial number (which means a gray-market version).

None of the dealers mentioned in that post is an authorized dealer. And buying from any of them, you run the risk that your rebate will not be valid.

Two different things.
“transferring”, as I was referring to here, was the concept of plugging the computer into the camera. You can do that (AFAIK) with either firewire or USB2; either way you could then transfer the contents of the P2 card onto your computer (or edit directly from the cards in the camera).
As far as “offloading” goes — that’s the term we’ve been using to describe the process where you just plug in any old off-the-shelf external hard disk and the camera can automatically offload the contents of its P2 cards onto the external drive. i.e., no computer necessary.
In the very first announcement back at the Apple event at NAB, they announced firewire with AV/C (streaming) and SBP2 (file transfer) protocols. Initially we thought that meant that you could use it to offload files to a firewire drive. Apparently there was an effort made to make the file offloading work through USB2 drives, but the most recent info that we have is that it’s actually going to work the way they originally announced — streaming and offloading are both handled by the firewire port. You can plug firewire drives in and the camera can control them and offload the card contents to the drive. Or you can plug in an “intelligent” drive (like a FireStore) and stream directly to it.
USB2 is used for connecting to the computer, but direct control of USB2 drives to offload card contents is not going to happen. Instead you get that same functionality if you use a firewire drive.

Yes, you could transfer via firewire or via USB2.
Or, you could just pull the card out of the camera and plug it into a PCMCIA/CardBus 32 slot. That way you could edit directly from the card, without having to transfer it to your computer.
Technically you could edit directly from the card even while it’s still in the camera; if you plug the camera into the computer, then the camera will show up on your desktop as an external removable hard disk, and the contents of that “hard disk” will be whatever’s on your cards. So you don’t actually have to transfer to the computer at all if you don’t want — you can edit straight from the cards while they’re still in the camera.

You may not have to do anything of the sort though. You may be able to render a P2-compatible MXF file from your editing program, then all you need to do is copy the file onto the P2 card.
I don’t know how FCP will handle it, but a P2 card can be plugged into a PCMCIA slot and show up on the desktop as an external hard disk. There’s no reason you’d need to transfer back through firewire to the camera, you should just be able to copy the file straight to the card.

I think you’re confusing “letterbox” mode with “squeeze” mode. Letterbox mode records a normal-looking image for a 4:3 TV, with black bars on it. Squeeze mode records a vertically-stretched image, which will only look proper once it’s displayed on a widescreen television. Sounds like you’ve got the two modes mixed in your footage.
