If those items were in the box, then you’re probably fine. Try applying for the rebate on Panasonic’s website, it should work. And if that’s the case, you shouldn’t have any reason to need to return the unit, it’s probably a genuine US unit.

October 14, 2005 at 8:44 am in reply to: DVX100A: mail-in rebate ending, and newbie questions

[Johnathan] “What will happen with this price after 31.oct? Will there be a new rebate offer from Panasonic soon after, or will I have to pay $500 more if I’m not putting up the cash before the end of this month?”
We don’t know what will happen then. We do know that a new DVX100B is being prepared for release, and that it will carry the same retail price as the DVX100A. What hasn’t been announced is whether any of the same bundled items will be included, etc. So it is certainly possible that a DVX100A will be the less-expensive way to go, although that’s not guaranteed either; although it would seem unusual to introduce a new model with a rebate in place!

You may or may not have a legitimate US unit. Was The DVX Book in the box? Was the Magic Bullet Editors software in the box? If both of those are in there, then you probably have a legit unit, which would be eligible for warranty coverage.

If neither item was in the box, then you got hosed with a grey-market unit.

And be ready when you try to return it — they may hit you up for a 15% “restocking charge” — that’ll mean you have to pay them about $500 just to take it back!

[Frosch] “Funny, cuz you’d never hear one of the sales associates for “pricerite camera” or whoever tell you that.”
No, you sure won’t! In fact, if you ask them if the camera has a warranty, they may tell you “yeah, it has a full US warranty.”

Note they didn’t say “manufacturer’s warranty”! So when you get it, you may find out that the “US warranty” is FROM THEIR STORE — i.e., you’d have to send it back to them and trust THEM to do the repair. Yeah, sure. And they justify it by saying “hey, we’re in Brooklyn, that’s in the US, so it’s a US warranty.”

It’s not the price that does it, it’s that it has to be an actual US-sourced unit which was received and inventoried by Panasonic US, and then sent to an authorized dealer (like B&H, Armatos, Full Compass, Abel, Birns & Sawyer, etc).

Places like Beach and Broadway and USAPhotoNation cannot buy their product from Panasonic — they’re not authorized dealers. So they buy what they can find, where they can find it — that may include importing them from South America, or Japan, or who knows where. That’s called “gray market”. And if you, a US customer, buy a Japan-market camera, you won’t have a warranty here, and you won’t qualify for the rebate, because it’s not a US unit. If you need warranty work you’ll have a warranty in Japan, sure — so you could send it to Japan for service, but if you send it to the US service centers you’d quickly find out you don’t have a US warranty.

Gray marketers are like used-car dealers. They have no relationship with the manufacturer and cannot buy their goods from the manufacturer, so they get ’em where they can. And manufacturers warranties may or may not apply. If it so happens that they buy some stock from an authorized US dealer which they intend to re-sell, then hey — good news for the customer, because that means they’ll get a warranty. On those particular units. If those run out and they can’t get any more, so they have to start importing units from Mexico — well, bad news for the customer. No warranty, no rebate.

By going with B&H you circumvented all that mess. You got it from an authorized retailer, which means you will have a full manufacturer’s warranty, the DVX Book/DVD and Magic Bullet Editors software in the box, and are eligible for the $500 rebate and the free battery and free box of tapes. If you’d gone gray-market you wouldn’t get any of that stuff.

October 12, 2005 at 10:16 pm in reply to: New 60 GB video iPod for quick HVX-200 field storage??

[Emery] “So yes, you will absolutely need a computer to interface with any hard drive (ipod or otherwise.)”

Not exactly true. It is true that the HVX cannot stream directly to any old firewire hard drive for live capture (that’s when you’d need a firestore). However, the HVX CAN control a firewire drive for SBP2 copying of files.

So, if the iPod Video had a firewire port, you could do what you’re contemplating — shoot to the P2 cards, and when they’re full, offload to the iPod. Unfortunately it looks like the iPod Video doesn’t have a firewire port, so the point becomes moot.

You could still use any self-powered firewire hard disk, of course. Just not an ipod, and only because the ipod doesn’t have a firewire port.

October 12, 2005 at 10:11 pm in reply to: P2 and Mac

[Amadon amadon] “In THAT case, you can plug in, as Steve said you will be able to, into a G5 mac with an SATA speed drive, and record til the drive fulls up. The resulting file is then what you edit”

Yes you can do exactly that. As long as you’re running a capture utility that recognizes DVCPRO-HD data streams (and FCP5 or FCP-HD will do that), then yes, you can do what you’re asking.

On the PC Side, Canopus and Avid offer the same type of thing, and Serious Magic has talked about coming out with a version of DV Rack that supports DVCPRO-HD, so there will be several options.

[Amadon amadon] “people are completely unaware that the 200 may record DIRECTLY to a superfast drive.”
Well, we have to be careful with the terminology here. The HVX can copy the contents of a P2 card directly to an external firewire hard disk, yes. It has to record to P2 first, but once it’s recorded, it can then (by itself) communicate with and transfer files to a firewire hard disk. And it doesn’t have to be a “superfast” drive; it can be any firewire drive.

What it cannot do is record live to a regular hard disk *instead* of to P2. It can record directly to a FireStore hard disk, but not just any old off-the-shelf hard disk.

[Amadon amadon] “For my money, it is perfectly acceptable to decidate a mac tower to the shoot, and let it record away. Is everybody missing that point, or does that wonderful possibility simply not EXIST?”

The possibility definitely DOES exist, and not only that, it’s already there. FCP already supports capturing live firewire streams. That was what the FCP-HD update was all about. So if you’re willing to be cabled to your mac tower, you can be shooting HD straight to your computer immediately — you don’t even have to have P2 cards or a FireStore or anything, just plug in and go.

[Rodrigo Lizana] “About the HVX, as an owner of tape based DVCPRO HD equipment, what if I want to record the footage on tape (as for safety reasons).”
What deck do you have? If you have the AJ-HD1200A, you can record from the HVX to the deck thru firewire.

October 11, 2005 at 10:48 pm in reply to: Question about USB backup for Jan

[Harry] “ow long per gig/per minute do you guys reckon it would take to do the camera to drive firewire transfer/backups?”

Depends on how fast your drive is. Theoretically the transfer from the camera could be at the rate of 400 megabits per second, which would be 4x realtime (i.e., 15 seconds to transfer one minute of footage); however, you’d be hard pressed to find a hard disk with a minimum sustained write speed of 50 megabytes per second!
