Yes the levels should head into the red.
On the DVX, the transition from white to red happens at -12dB. If you never let it go into the red, you’d be wasting all that dynamic range headroom from 0 to 12dB. Of course, you don’t want it to go too far into the red; you’ve got six dots available (each dot represents 2dB) and your audio will sound great right until it smacks into that sixth dot; at that point it’s clipped and distorted. So keep some free headroom, but use the red. Three dots into the red will give you peak levels at -6dB.

Yes, it has the same functionality.

Yes, the HVX200 is $5995 MSRP, the DVX100B is $3995 MSRP (although, to be fair, the DVX has a $400 rebate on it, so the DVX will end up costing less than the MSRP difference would indicate).

Not correct. There’s the AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO-HD deck, there’s Avid XPress Pro HD and Media Composer systems, there’s Canopus Edius Broadcast, there’s the capability (for whatever reason) to use another HVX through firewire as a capture device, or there’s some new forthcoming P2 deck that you should be able to capture with. And a few weeks from now the FireStore should be available.

Correct — look in the bottom left of the thumbnail screen and you’ll see a logo denoting what the format of the clip is. You need to go to camera mode and match menu #5’s REC FORMAT to match the clip you want to play back.
Sounds like a bit of a hassle, but it really only affects you when using multiple formats on the same card — I originally thought it was a big inconvenience, but quickly figured out that the only times I’m really doing multiple formats on the same card is for my various testing purposes. In real-world shooting we almost always pick one format/rec mode and stick with it. And in that case, you’ll never see the red numbers and won’t have to worry about matching the rec format.

Right, but the thing is — Jan can’t do a thing about it. She’s Panasonic US,and only Panasonic US. Panasonic Canada is a whole different company. Your complaints should be targeted directly to the Panasonic Canada representatives who can do something about the situation; only Panasonic Canada can resolve it.

No, you’re SHOOTING 1080/24p. But what gets recorded is a 1080/60i data stream. The 24P frames are carried within a 60i wrapper.

If you get an HVX, you will indeed think you’ve died & gone to heaven.
Okay, perhaps a bit of an exaggeration (a BIT!) but seriously, the HVX is a better DVX than the DVX100B is. It’s true native 16:9 so you do away with the anamorphic adapter and all its restrictions; it has a longer zoom lens (which you can use in native 16:9 mode to get shallow-DOF 16:9), it has a wider wide-angle, and it has all the other DVX goodness, plus it has tapeless workflow, DVCPRO50 (which, once you use it, you may never go back to DV again), and then there’s two different flavors of HD and variable frame rates too.
But, it is a steep price increase over the DVX100B ($2,000).
The 100B is a very nice refinement to the 100. I never bothered to upgrade from my 100 to the 100A, but I did sell my 100 for a 100B. 100B is lower-noise, has 16:9 squeeze mode (with proper aspect ratio display on the viewfinder), fixed “echo”, all sorts of nice refinements and improvements. Either would be a good choice, especially if you’ve been using the anamorphic adapter.

I took the MC-61 on a plane and it fit in the overhead. I was concerned though, as it does seem really big and I thought the flight attendant at the door might stop me and make me check it, but they let me through.

You have to upgrade to FCP 5.0.4. FCP5 doesn’t support P2 HD, but 5.0.4 does.
