Raylight will give you the most metadata that you’re going to get in the FCP workflow, until FCP decides to offer proper MXF support.

It already is. B&H has the HVX at $5200, and the EX1 at $7500. That’s about a 45% cost premium.

According to Sony’s press release, their 16GB card is 700 Euros. That translates to US $950 or so. How is that cheaper?
Granted, lots of people were *expecting* them to be cheaper, but that doesn’t appear to be what happened in reality.
But yeah, Red’s use of CF definitely points towards some interesting lower-cost options.

Yes, but it’s also 33% more expensive. I would hope that it would offer lots of improvements for that type of price increase.

No, they’re not. They’re a lot more than that. As Sony found out; their new SxS is actually (based on today’s exchange rate) going to be *more* expensive than P2 is.

The only expresscard-to-PCMCIA adapter that will work with P2 is the DuelAdapter.
The only USB/firewire adapter that will work with P2 is the Panasonic PCD20 (or the earlier PCD10).
No other adapter will work. We’ve been down this road a thousand times… only the duel adapter, or the panasonic adapters, will work with P2 cards.

Upgrade your FireStore’s software to version 4.0. That enables slow-mo recording. Be sure to read the documentation thoroughly so you get the proper settings right.

Probably for the same reason Sony is using a RAID chip on their SxS cards — because the underlying memory technology is just too slow on its own.
The ExpressCard technology allows for 2.5gbps transfer rate at the bus level, but the actual SxS cards are limited to 800mbps. Just like the PCMCIA bus is capable of 1 gbps data transfer rate, but the P2 cards max out at 640mbps.
A faster theoretical bus speed doesn’t translate into real-world performance gains (I mean, the PCMCIA bus is faster than the SxS cards). The underlying memory technology is the hangup; Panasonic RAIDS together SD cards, Sony probably RAIDS together the raw components, but either way there is no memory chip that runs at 800mbps or 640mbps; it has to be done by RAIDing.

According to Mikko who’s out on the show floor at IBC, Sony says that:
a) the EX1 will only record to SxS media, not to generic ExpressCards
b) the SxS looks like it’s actually more expensive than P2 (700 Euros for 16GB = $950 US)
c) the EX1 uses rolling-shutter CMOS technology and exhibits some “wobble”.

MXF is a much more interchangeable file format; basically every editor can edit the MXF files (either natively, or through using Raylight).
So yes, just copy the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT folder — no need to go through any importing/quicktime conversion step.
