Bitstream-wise, in NTSC, there’s no difference that I know of. As you pointed out, in PAL, DVCPRO retains 4:1:1 color sampling which is a difference.
Also DVCPRO employs locked audio vs. the DV standard of unlocked; however, the DVX100 and the JVC DV500/DV5000 use locked audio anyway, so I would expect that the HVX will employ locked audio whether in DV or DVCPRO mode.

Definitely. Plug the P2 card in your laptop’s PCMCIA slot, and it will mount on the desktop as an external hard disk. All the clips will be instantly available, and you can edit at very high speed directly from the card.

Well, that’s true, but perhaps misleading. You can output the 720/24p on the component outputs, but it will be carried within a 60p stream. Same with 720/30p. So yes, the analog outputs are only outputting 720/60p, but it’s not like you can’t put film-looking footage on the analog outputs, because you can; it just gets transported within a 60p data stream.

I don’t know that they’ve spelled it out, but it’s a reasonably safe assumption that it will support 4:3. Has there ever been a 16:9 camera released that didn’t also have a 4:3 mode?

HD-SDI is not an option on any of these cameras. You can get an aftermarket AJA analog-component-to-HD-SDI converter box, that’s what JVC was demonstrating with their HD100. But as for the manufacturers providing direct HD-SDI connectivity, none of them will. It’s all going to be coming from analog component.

There won’t be HD-SDI on any of these cameras. You can get a converter box from (I think it was) AJA, that converts analog component to HD-SDI, but there’s no direct HD-SDI output on the HVX, the JVC HD100, or the Z1.
As for transfer speed — transfer speed is limited by the receiving device. Theoretically a P2 card could transfer its contents at 6 to 64 times real time, depending on what format you’d recorded on. If you use the maximum bitrate, 100 megabits, you could still transfer the entire contents at 6x realtime, provided you had a receiving device that supported those kinds of speeds.

I tried to extort an answer from her today at NAB about that as well. All she will commit to is that there’s 4, there’s 60, there’s 24, there’s 30, but she won’t specify what frame rates there are between 4 and 60. Other than to say that yes, there are frame rates besides 4, 24, 30, and 60. I asked “are there ‘many’ frame rates besides those?” No answer.
So, more info will be forthcoming, I expect that there will be lots of frame rates, but probably not every frame rate from the VariCam.

I wrote up a 7-page article based on my interview, and had her fact-check it before publishing it, so I’m pretty sure it’s authoritative.
