This was discussed a bit over at DVXUser.com, and the writer of the Tomshardware article actually posted himself to say that it was a misunderstanding and he was waiting for their webmaster to fix the error.
The HVX200 will definitely stream SD and HD out of the firewire port.
Whether or not we can record that directly to ANY harddrive has yet to be confirmed, but if we can’t there will probably be some 3rd party solution (i.e. Firestore, etc).Luis Caffesse

Another mistake?”I’m not sure on that one, he didn’t mention anything about it in the DVXuser discussion.

April 21, 2005 at 6:20 pmI hope an SDI isn’t a $6000.00 option like the 1200 deck. These decks should have had firewire and HDSDI built in instead of $6000.00 and $4000.00 options. If they came off the assembly line with it built in in all units it wouldn’t have cost so much to add on and wouldn’t want it. These manufacturers are learning too much from Ioccoca who saved chrysler. “You want doggie dishes” (hub caps)? “thats $400.00″…..”OK… how many would you like sir?” Don’t you just hate marketing ploys and sales gimmicks? Especially when you were just at the same marketing seminar as the slipery salesman who is now appling it to you.
Pannasonic has been very reasonable on pricing this camera so far so I hope it is built in at a reasonable cost. -

April 22, 2005 at 5:57 amHD-SDI is not an option on any of these cameras. You can get an aftermarket AJA analog-component-to-HD-SDI converter box, that’s what JVC was demonstrating with their HD100. But as for the manufacturers providing direct HD-SDI connectivity, none of them will. It’s all going to be coming from analog component.

April 22, 2005 at 3:04 pmHi all,
Not sure where Tom got his info, but he is indeed incorrect. Firewire is available in 25M, 50M, and 100M. And the only HD output is Analog Component.
Hope that helps,
Jan

Thanks for the clarification Jan.
There seems to be a lot of bad information floating around, which is what makes your participation here so great. There nothing quite like getting an answer straight from the source.By the way, as far as the component output is concerned, will that output be active in all shooting modes? I know that on JVC’s camera, for example, the component outputs will only output 720P60, no other frame rates, and no SD output. Are the specs solid enough at this stage for you to be able to give us some more detail as to what we can expect from the component output on the HVX200 (Color space, Compression, SD & HD)?
Thanks again.

April 22, 2005 at 10:06 pmI knew firewire was available in 10; 20 and 50 meter lengths (or 33; 66; and 164 foot lengths) as I have the Videonics Distance DV cables but I hadn’t seen the 100 meter lengths. Videonics used to demo this cable in their booth at NAB and it works great. I just found this on line while searching for the 100 meter cable though and it looks interesting if it works properly. Newnex FireNEX800 Videonics has/is upgrading the MX Pro Dv mixer to include 4 firewire inputs. If it is compatible with the HVX200 streaming HD through firewire this will be a very affordable HD live switching set-up. I wish Videonics would add a 2nd. firewire output to this mixer. While I’m at it they need to build the power converter into the unit and have a quieter fan. Other than that it’s a fine piece of gear.

Well, that’s true, but perhaps misleading. You can output the 720/24p on the component outputs, but it will be carried within a 60p stream. Same with 720/30p. So yes, the analog outputs are only outputting 720/60p, but it’s not like you can’t put film-looking footage on the analog outputs, because you can; it just gets transported within a 60p data stream.

Oh, okay.
Thanks for the clarification Barry.
I wasn’t trying to mislead, I actually didn’t know that it would carry the 24 or 30p signal within a 60P stream.Well, that makes it a bit more usefull than I originally thought.
