  • Can You Edit Directly From A P2?

    I wonder if it is possible to edit directly from a P2 card when it is inserted into a computer’s pcmcia slot? I would think yes.

    P2 is capable of 640Mbps transfer speed. I thought my scsi HD RAID transfered somewhere over 100 mb/s for 4-5 streams of uncompressed YUV. At 640 Mbs, does that mean you could then edit multiple streams of HD (theoretically) without a RAID?

    b = bit
    B = byte = 8 bits

    You can’t fit 4-5 uncompressed to 100Mbps,
    so I guess you mean 100MBps

    I swear I’m going to confuse that little gem forever. You’re absolutely right.

    Avid was demoing a multi-stream edit directly from P2 in their booth so it’s possible. Though I think you’ll find perfomance is greatly improved by transferring to hard drive.

    Definitely. Plug the P2 card in your laptop’s PCMCIA slot, and it will mount on the desktop as an external hard disk. All the clips will be instantly available, and you can edit at very high speed directly from the card.

    I hope it can be used this way but it would be wise to download to disc until you got used to your system. I know when I transfer data from my Sandisk compact flash card through the Sandisk reader to the hard drive, the system has choked and froze when trying to download larger cards. This neccessates a reboot! (did someone say reshoot?!!) It is possible to lose data if this happens or your computer crashes for some other reason with the card pluged in. I now download off the larger cards in segments and never have this problem. It’s not the same comparing $90.00 Sandisc software and hardware with Panasonic P2 systems but until you’ve gotten accustomed to your set up it would be a good precaution to take (download to disc). Panasonic’s readers and cards seem much more robust so hopefully this will not be an issue. The standard proceedure for working with this digital data is: 1st. BACK-UP, then GO AHEAD! ….(That is: back-up your original, then go ahead and edit)

    P2 cards have been in the field for over a year now. The laptop system works. Backing up is always wise, yes, but this is a proven workflow already.
