Is their a marked difference in performance between the dual 2.3 GHz G5 and the quad 2.5GHz G5 when running AE 6.5?”YES!
And make sure you buy Nucleo with it, so that all CPU’s are loaded fully.

Depending on the project you can see how the Quad G5 is sometimes twice as fast as the dual G5.

are a P4 dual processor box. does that exclude amd processors?”Should run just fine. I’m running Opterons here. They say P4 because they’re using SSE2 instructions, but AMD supports those on many of their CPU’s too.

On the other hand, how many of you are running an Intel Mac workstation today? How many customers would Adobe have for a universal binary version of AE today?
The Mac Intel workstations are still a way off. And won’t be 64-bit until end of this year. I’m just hoping that the next release of AE will be 64-bit on both platforms. Which would be a lot of work.
Seriously… Adobe probably doesn’t want to support two different Mac versions for a long time. So it seems like a good idea to support PowerPC architecture when 99% of the Mac user base are using those. Once the 64-bit MacIntel workstations hit the market in a years time or so – it seems Adobe won’t be far behind.

Well, I do.
And with me there’s ILM, The Orphanage, and many other studios that use AE occasionally or even as their workhorse. Did you know that After Effects is the main compositing tool used at The Orphanage?
