Something must have been set wrong while capturing. Did you capture thru firewire or analog? make sure you capture thru firewire, SQUEEZED, will be the right size. When you make a still from the clip and open in Photoshop, what size is the picture and is there a black border?

  • I have an EX1 and EX3 at the Sony service center in NJ and the service person called and told me today that the stuttering on my EX3 is ‘normal.’ I said that was not mentioned in the manual, he said ‘it is mentioned in the addendum that was released later, and specifications change.’ I said if this was mentioned in the manual I would have returned it to the dealer because crawl zoom is part of my everyday work. My EX1 doesn’t have the problem so I trusted that the EX3 would be only better, not worse. He tells me to get a better lens. If I had that kind of money I would have bought an F900. Anyway, Sony gave us a good camera but goofed on the lens, and now when everybody is complaining they ‘change the specs’ so they have an argument. Reminds me of the recent Toyota debacle although it is not a comparable analogy.

Creep zoom is my ‘livelihood.’ I specialize in dance productions, especially Indian classical dance, and my long shots call for a lot of creep zoom.
In any case I drove up to Teaneck NJ (from Virginia) yesterday and gave both the EX1 and 3 for firmware update. The EX3 warranty expires on Wednesday so I made it in before that. Let’s see if I get lucky and they fix it. I have had bad experiences with Sony as far as service is concerned, they return stuff saying it’s fixed when it isn’t!

So I am just lucky that my EX1 does not have this ‘feature.’ Besides, my EX1 picture looks sharper than the EX3’s. May be my EX3 lens is faulty in that area too. But that could be another feature Sony has added to the EX3! Soft focus.
I want to add a third camera, may be the EX1r but the uncertainty of the lens jitter adds a certain jitter to my dilemma.

My EX3 has the same problem. In fact this issue has been discussed earlier here. I did call Sony to send it for repair and the guy in NJ told me that this is expected at speeds of 10 and under (!) as if it’s a feature. I am surprised that more people are not complaining to Sony about this ‘feature’. It stutters in slow zoom and it is expected? It does not say anywhere in the brochure that it is expected but they just came up with this idea when people started complaining.

  • CS3 will run great in Win7 64, but CS4 you cannot be sure until you install and run. CS4 depends highly on your machine and its components.

Sorry this is happening to you Mark. CS4 PP is a terrible program compared to CS3 PP (in my opinion). It works for some people but for others it’s a nightmare. I have i7-920 processor with 12GB ram and raid drives on Win7 64 bit and still unusable/unreliable.
I guess you must have tried clearing/deleting the cache files, or better yet starting a fresh project.
    Good Luck!

Such short clip shouldn’t have a problem at all. Do you have enough empty space in your relevant hard drives for cache, confirm etc? Have you updated PP to the latest version? CS4 PP in general is finicky so there must be a glitch somewhere in your setup.

    Hello Mark
If you are using CS4 PP there is no need for any conversion.
First copy the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive. Then import the folder in to your project (ignore errors). Now just drag and drop the VOB files to your timeline. That’s all. You will have all your video and audio from the DVD on the timeline.

When you create a new project make sure your timeline settings match the footage you import, such as 1280×720 pixels, 30 frames etc. It will depend on what format you recorded in.
