It’s unnatural to embrace the different, the strange, the unknown. If the Wright brothers had this attitude, we’d still be taking ships across the Atlantic. If Eric the Red had this attitude, there’d have been no Icelandic banking crisis because there’d be no people living there. If Marco Polo had this attitude, there’s be no lasagna. If Thomas Edison had this attitude, we’d still be using candles and gaslights at night.
Progress can be painful, it can be disruptive. It can also be transformative. Look at the internet. Sure, there’s a lot of risk of computer virii and identity theft, but it’s transformed travel, shopping, banking and even the Mideast. Computers have transformed the film & video industries.
Advances in software and hardware have raised the bar of what we can do, and lowered the bar of who thinks they can do it. At the end of the day, though, it’s still up to us to get the work done.
FCP-X is just another video editing program. But it’s different. Very different. As an editor, I’m excited. It’s a new way to work at telling stories. It doesn’t do everything I need today, but someday it might. And even if it doesn’t, there are other programs that do. And I expect those other programs to look a lot like FCP-X in a couple of years.

Personally, I think that Windows Vista was the most embarrassing software release so far. But someone will someday have the distinction of making a worse one. Just like “Gigli” eventually made “Ishtar” look like a decent film.
Apple has had bad releases before. Some with FCP, some not.
Avid has had some real stinkers. Adobe, too. It happens to all software companies that have the luck to stay in business long enough to make a mistake.
And I wouldn’t call this release embarrassing. Maybe a bit premature, perhaps, but far from embarrassing. More like a work in progress- as is all good software, in the end.
Yes, there are features missing, but many of those will probably come in updates over the next few months. Even if you can’t lay back to tape today, you absolutely can cut and trim video, and that’s what editors really do most of the time. the tape layback (and EDL support, I hope!) will probably come soon. And even if it doesn’t AJA and Black Magic already have utilities that do this.
Be patient, the app was only released this morning. Maybe tomorrow it will get better, maybe next month. In the meantime, FCP 7 will still work. As will Avid and Premiere, if those suit your needs better.
It’s only software. Not the rapture.

What evidence is there that there’s no tape ingest? None.
Why don’t all the self-proclaimed experts of FCP-X calm down & wait for Apple to release specs & other details?
Base predictions on facts not rumors.

There’s no ingest. Right. It will be sold with all of the media you’ll ever want to use, including footage you haven’t shot yet. Actually, we were indirectly told that there is ingest, because we were told that there is (optional) automatic stabilization and color correction on ingest.
Honestly I find this type groundless, irresponsible of statement from Hodgetts, and similar wild conjectures from others who are equally out of the know to be appalling.
They’re making authoritative pronouncements based on what they didn’t see. This is the same logic that tells us that the sun orbits a flat earth.
I don’t mind if these guys want to promote themselves by giving webinars and issuing white papers, but they should do so from a position of actual knowledge, not conjecture and speculation. That’s simply irresponsible.

On the whole, I think the Sneak Peek was a good idea.
Before this there was a small but loud group threatening to switch to Premiere if Apple didn’t update FCP to do things like edit AVCHD/h.264 natively. That chorus is no longer singing. (Of course, it’s also possible that they’ve all switched, and are to busy trying to figure out PP to post on internet forums.)
I would like it more if Apple had followed up by posting a page or 2 detailing FCP-X’s features and some specs, maybe even a draft of the manual or quick start guide.
But Apple is a company that is secretive by habit, such openness is probably very difficult for them to accommodate themselves to.
What would you rather have? An Apple that tells us nothing until it’s carved in stone? Or a Red that glibly announces any speculative project that they dream up with a note that all specs & prices are subject to change? Truth is, I’d rather not have either extreme, there has to be a happy middle.

I’d like to point out that it’s also not yet known if it can’t. Yes, backward compatibility is a very serious issue, but I suspect that someone at Apple (like Randy Ubillos, perhaps?) kind of knows this already.

I’m also worried that it might cause all of my food to spoil. No one’s really addressed that concern, either.

Me too! We’re engaging in a game of kremlinology, where we look at a photo of the Soviet leaders watching the annual May Day parade, and then interpret that photo to tell us what the state of the Soviet wheat harvest will be. But the kremlinologists don’t seem to know or care that the photo is doctored and the event is staged.
