March 4, 2009 at 7:49 pm in reply to: WHY WOULD I NEED a DeckLink HD Extreme if I can capture via firewire? The DVX100 is a DV camera. It has only DV output through the 1394 port and no Component/SDI/HDMI outputs.
There is absolutely no gain in capturing with the Decklink card.
The big question is: Do you plan on getting a better camera, or capturing from a deck with SDI and serial control?
If yes, then the Decklink is a hardware you may want to keep. What is your deliverable? If it is just DVD, then again you do not require the Decklink.
Do you require color timing your videos and previewing to a broadcast monitor? Are you planning on getting one in the near future? If not…well you know the answer…
You can always convert the DV files to ProRes or uncompressed for compositing in Shake or CC in Color etc..No need for the card again.

DVCPRO-HD support on FCP actually comes from FCP itself with Blackmagic’s driver using it to create the corresponding preset and providing monitor preview support, deck control etc.
I do not think you will encounter any issues editing DVCPRO-HD 24fps with Blackmagic as it is officially supported and it is a fairly common codec-preset combination used in FCP. Some major films even used it as an offline codec for film editing.
Having used both cards (The AJA on a Mac) I can honestly say that in my view, the AJA is a better and more professional card than the Blackmagic, with the latter having a good price/performance advantage for those on a budget and a wider compatibility spec for those on a PC with desktop components were the AJA card simply wouldn’t work.
However both of them have their quirks.
Are you going to be capturing/editing from Varicam/HDX tape material or importing from P2 MXF?

I used Edius for a time, back then, it was the only NLE on PC with proper native MXF Op-Atom (DVCPRO-HD) support, highly stable and reliable most of the time and very fast. Every software choice is a compromise and Edius had a lot of them, i.e audio management was horrendous, keyframing stuff was either not possible or outright a pain in the ass, UI was cluttered and the bin was a source of program crashes.
Premiere is a much more complete NLE, yet it still doesn’t have the stability it should have had by now and CS4 isn’t bringing that much more stability, at least in the version it is now.

Yeah, it used to be that companies would issue a new software release only when there were very significant changes. I believe Apple is much more to that philosophy than Adobe. I mean FCP 6 has been out for some time now and it has been enhanced and supported with point updates providing a more mature update approach for professionals.
Maybe Adobe should follow that mantra, in the long run their sales could be hurt by these reckless “new releases”. Right now they’re already facing criticism for improper AVCHD support, AME issues, H264 problems on CS4. There is always a price for rushing products to market and Adobe could have just as well made a point update with most of the features of CS4 (i.e the explorer view,AAF,OMF) along with some bug fixes.
Let’s hope for the best and some sense in Adobe.

[Horacio Campos] “Is there any problem in using the BM Studio with teh new Intel I7? Or is it better to use Intel QuadCore?”
The Intel i7 is quad core as well (actually there are only quad core models) and there isn’t any compatibility issue at the processor level. The motherboard is another story since the chipset is new.
Unfortunately with desktop setups (mainboard/vga) its hit or miss, although using PCIe has mostly eliminated the problem there are still issues, mostly at the driver level.
However the possibility of having a proper working system is about 90% if you take heed in driver versions and mainboard/graphic card selection.
Or you can buy a Mac.. -

Are you using latest drivers?
Have you tried uninstalling/installing the drivers? -

January 28, 2009 at 6:13 pm in reply to: When exactly will CS4 Drivers be available?I think you are being overly dramatic.
Let’s take a look at the facts:
The fact is that not even AJA or Bluefish444 for that matter have released any CS4 drivers and it has already been discussed here. Do the same things said apply for these companies as well? Are they too plunging into oblivion?
Customers/Professionals know when they should upgrade and that is displayed on the newest drivers section on any manufacturers website. Until then, they can only wait and ask the company for a release estimate. After that there isn’t anything anyone can do.
For discussion’s sake nor Avid or Apple give any release dates no matter the pleading and nagging and I seem to recall and Avid forum post which lasted more than a year and it regarded 720p 25 support. Avid never released a date and announced repeatedly that is coming…Adobe by its mistake displayed or implied support for blackmagic cards on the CS4 when it clearly shouldn’t.
Turnkey systems were sold with CS4 and BM cards when there were no support. This is I think is partially the resellers’ fault for not knowing, Adobe’s fault and Blackmagic’s for not properly communicating this with resellers. It’s obvious that Adobe has had the major screw up, by releasing a product without any co-operation with its card making partners. All of them.

Capturing stresses a drive. It probably was stressed enough to start having problems, especially if it’s not properly cooled. It could be a faulty drive. when was it purchased?

January 12, 2009 at 10:43 am in reply to: File Format for Omni-CinemCraft Blu-ray EncodeYou can export to apple component which is 4:2:2yuv uncompressed (there are losses when converting rgb to yuv) Or export to 10bit uncompressed 4:2:2 avi which I think is better, since the Apple is 8bit I think, but others can correct me on this.

This thing:
https://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html
Claims to strip the blu-ray encryption, so it is maybe possible to send a digital signal by using a PC.
Although I haven’t tested it.
