Yup, they actually provided the stickers with the Leopard DVD as well :)))
Anyways, I did some tests with media encoder on vista:
Uncompressed RGB to H264, BM 4:2:2, BM JPEG and performance varies from 60 to 100% faster (hyperthreading enabled)
The i7 is truly a gem…

Hi Peter,
I wouldn’t call it a hackintosh installation, since there is no illegal or patched software being used, nor there’s any connection with the hackintosh community. The EFI-X is simply an (albeit an ellaborate one) implementation of intel’s EFI specification, which simply enables EFI aware OSes (that’s why you can’t use XP) to install and load using a bootcamp style interface.
As for the second part, I’m not a lawyer but I hear that the EULA pertaining to mac hardware only installations, is a little bit on a grey zone in the United States but I could be dead wrong.
Apple actually did (as you probably already know) prosecute a company which was selling their own pc’s with a hacked (modified) version of mac OSX installed…the hardware aforementioned has nothing to do with that and they actually (The EFI-X company) provided press releases defining the differences and the reason they have no litigation and actually enjoy a good relationship with Apple, also the DMCA does not apply in any way to my country.
But I think we slipped off topic. This is a post on a new system that the Blackmagic card works. Most people can keep the working Windows vista x64 setup information, so they can maybe choose to make a safe upgrade, the other part is as stated initially: a side note…
Cheers 🙂

Yup, I’ve always built my own machines…except of course my laptop…

I would highly recommend Vista x64 with 8gb of memory or more, there are clear performance advantages in all applications (Premiere, AE etc..) and vista seems to be really stable after SP1, besides Microsoft is now offering a free upgrade path to 7 for customers purchasing Vista now…

Some scattered answers:
Been using PP CS4 Vista x64 8gb ram with the extreme for some time now. I actually had little problems with the same setup in CS3, I have encountered serious problems due to the fact that Blackmagic and Adobe had bugs in their drivers/software which with the latest updates seem to have been fixed…Most of my problems were with rendering the timeline (720 25p mostly, 1080 projects were more stable) and rendering with this darn new AME…
SDI and Y output seems to been working fine…
You can edit both DV and HDV in the timeline although as you probably already know the DV clips will be smaller when you watch them on the preview monitor so you will need to scale them…My off topic suggestion will be NOT to scale them in Premiere and upscale them in AME or i.e Procoder in the sequence resolution you will be working and in a proper codec, as quality is substantially better that way…
Haven’t used a Matrox nor would I personally want to work with one besides maybe with an MXO on a Mac..But by looking at the specs the difference seems to be the hardware acceleration of HDV/DV timeline…However there is absolutely no need for special acceleration on HDV timelines on modern Windows/Macs on Quad or Octo-Core configurations, especially the Nehalem ones. Nor am I impressed by matrox’s mostly cheesy/porn style hardware accelerated effects and transitions.
There is not a definite answer on rendering times since that all depends on what kind of footage you will be editing, its resolution, its data rate, if there are dynamically linked stuff on AE, the kind and amount of effects/transitions/audio automations and last but not least the kind of codec and data rate you will be rendering your stuff to.
You could consider Cineform as very useful complementary tool, it is the Prores of windows, although it works on the Mac too..
From experience a proper RAID system makes all the difference in the world…

Chris I know that this may frustrate you more, but since there seems to be a problem with the BM AVI wrapped codec, would working with a quicktime wrapped Blackmagic codec work for you? It is supported on windows and I have personally worked with it with no problems…Would that work with the velocity systems?

I wasn’t talking about the other workstations, I was talking about the one HP workstation you mentioned which has the blackmagic card…The problematic Premiere project actually led to me the question, because its curious for this to happen if no software or hardware has been changed/updated…

You could try reverting to an older driver version, as you said the problems started when you installed the latest driver.
There could also be a memory (memory issues can be quite unpredictable) or hard disk problem.
You can quickly check your (you must create a bootable usb or floppy but it’s very easy) memory with memtest:

What kind of application are you using for your color correction? If you want to preview your changes while doing them the application has to be supported from the card’s drivers. Other than that it sounds like a good choice.

Peter,
Blue screen errors are usually attributed to driver and memory issues mostly, but there are specific error numbers and descriptions. It would certainly help if you could provide it. We could maybe steer you to some direction i.e irq_driver_less_not_equal is a driver issue.
Blue screens occur mostly when the computer is stressed, especially when memory is at fault.
