    They are different layers (as in, they’re different shapes). But if I apply an adjustment layer with a light sweep on it and place this adjustment layer over both the coin core and coin border, it interprets these 3D layers as if they were flat and I don’t know how I can add a light sweep that affects the coin border ONLY and another one that affects the coin core ONLY.

  • Hi Dave! thanks for your reply. Turns out it was a memory issue… my old laptop doesn’t have the power (or the patience) to deal with Element 3D, and so it wasn’t able to render it. Thanks anyway!

    Hi Emre! This works great, thank you so much!
    I found another way that involved rotating the original shape until it’s vertical, making a precomp, animating it, and precomping again and de-rotating it – such a headache, your solution seems like a godsend! : )

    Hi Kalleheikki! What you say makes sense, but unfortunately I don’t know how to rotate the shape in 2D without rotating the axis (or changing the rotation values). Control-T starts the text command for me.

    Hi! Yes, I understand that. However, it is not just the anchor point that determines rotation: an axis around which the rotation occurs is also needed. If I do what you’ve described and rotate the light blue triangle around the y-axis (by changing the y degree value in the “rotation” field of the shape), this comprehensively happens: The centre of the rotation is the anchor point, and the shape rotates around the y axis, as it can be seen. I need the y axis to be aligned to the triangle’s long side so that when I rotate the shape around this axis, it unfolds outwards. I hope this explains a little better my problem

    I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I don’t understand. Repositioning the anchor point only changes the triangle’s “centre of rotation”, so to speak. What I would like to do is basically rotate the axis’ XY plane around the z axis so that the Y axis aligns to the triangle’s long side.

    Thank you all so much for taking the time to read my post and reply. I figured what the problem was: I was placing pins on a layer which I had already animated beforehand (scaling in and out, moving up and down and whatnot), meaning that when I later put the pins on it, the mesh did weird things. I managed to fix it by increasing the mesh size, but to be honest what I should’ve done is redo all the animation, this time placing the pins before adding any other change to that wing layer throughout it. Lesson learned: if you’re planning to animate a layer in a way that involves “puppeting it” at some point, do that right at the start, before implementing any other animation!

    Yep, after some meddling, I arrived to your first solution : ) I tried deleting the drop shadow layer style and use a drop shadow effect too, but unfortunately that doesn’t allow to set the shadow to overlay. I ended up duplicating the layer, displacing it a little, filling it with gray and blurring it and setting it to overlay before clipping it. It worked great!
