Have a look at the HDTV presets.

Make sure your sequence matches your footage.
If most of the footage is widesreen make the sequence widescreen of v.v.
Then export to desired format.

Make a custom preset.
New Sequence/General/Editing Mode/Desktop.
Now you are able to make a sequence exactly like your source.

If i understand correct what you want is called a travelling matte.
Nest your matte and do the keyframing for position in the nested sequence.

If Premiere acts funny fire up Premiere while holding down ctrl+shift+alt. Other than that i have no idea.

You don’t have to do all the png’s one by one.
You can set an action script.

Double click on the layer that will unlock.
If you can upload the psd somewhere we could have a look why its not working.
The psd needs to be in RGB mode.

HD is always widescreen no other flavour.
If you want to know upfront run the file through MediaInfo.

Otherwise import into Premiere and read the info next to the preview window in the Project Panel. If you made the wrong project settings, make a new Project and import the old one.

Go to Interprete Footage and see what the alpha is set to, adjust accordently.
