Hi there,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been out at a trade show with little online access.
I’m finding it hard to understand exactly what the problem is but have you tried using the Flowchart view so that you can see the structure of your project? Perhaps this would help?

Hi there,
What you can do is reverse all the layers except the rain layer which should be a separate layer. So, if you have a piece of footage playing forwards, and you want to reverse it, just open the Duration column in the Timeline and set it to -100%. This will make the footage play backwards. Then put your CC Rain effect on a separate Black Solid layer on top. As long as the Solid Layer is black, you can use the Add Blending mode to composite it over the layer below. This will knock out all the black pixels leaving you with the rain.

Hi there,
Have you run the latest updates for AE CS5? there was a syncing issue in 10.0.0 but it’s been fixed now so running Software Update from the Help menu may be an easy solution for you. If you run the update and still have problems you may want to check that the frame rates are indentical in FCP and AE.

Hi there,
It is possible to build something like this in After Effects but you’ll need to invest in a plug-in called Zaxwerks Invigorator to help you achieve it. With invigorator you can buld the platform from primitives and use it to extrude an EPS of your logo into a 3D object. You can build video walls quite easily in After Effects using 3D layers. Once you add a camera to the scene you can also have Invigorator react to the same cameras and lights as the other 3D layers.
this is by no means an easy job but it can be done. Here’s a link to the software you’ll need;

You can use CC Particle World to create steam, it’s a fantastic plugin and comes free with AE. I have a tutorial on setting up Particle World here. this one is more for fire and smoke but once you’ve gone through the tutorial you should be confident enough with it to create your own steam affect!

Also, what may be causing a lot of your noise isues is the fact you’re using the blue channel. The blue channel is most often the one that contains the majority of noise. I usually find the red channel is the best to use as it maintains a lot of skintones and is usually fairly noise-free.

BTW, if you’ve already made the mistake and need to work out exactly how much to scale your mask by to make it exactly 500% (or 100) you can adjust it numerically by clicking on the “Shape” hyperlink in the Switches column, next to the Mask Path property. In here, change the units of measurement to % of source and then go ahead and change the values. You can also get to the same dialog by selcting the mask and going to Layer > Mask > Mask Shape.

Hi there,
you can achieve this effect in post within After Effects by adding Time Remapping to the video, speeding it up and slowing it down by adding keyframes then create the blurry efffect by applying frame blending, precomposing and then adding the Echo filter to the footage. this effect was used a lot on music videos in the 1990’s, I remember it well! We were asked to recreate it about a million times! 😉

Well, you can try but sounds like you’ve already given it a go. Have you looked at the individual channels? Quite often the Red channel can be used as a matte for keying if it’s strong enough. Try looking at all three channels individually. If the red is strong, duplicate the layer, use Shift Channels to isolate it on one of the layers (take Red, Green and Blue from Red). Add levels effect to boost contrast. If you get good results yo can precompose this and then use the Luma Track Matte option in the Switches column to create alpha info from the Luma info.
