Hi Paul,
Glad it helped.You’ll probably find that although the image looks “washed out” on the computer monitor, it will look fine when broadcast.
For broadcast, pure black has a value of 16 which looks like a dark grey on a computer monitor, hence the washed out appearance. Do you have access to a PAL monitor to check it on before output? I’m pretty sure it will look a lot better when you see it broadcast.

Actually it is still very possible to render unsafe values from AE so the best solution is to use the free Levels – Computer to Video preset which will redistribute the black, white and gamma levels evenly before outputting. This means you don’t lose information like you would if you just clipped the values.
The Broadcast Safe plug-in allows you to create safe colors either by reducing luma or chroma values so offers a little more control than just banking on clipping values which is a risky business and can look terrible.

To make your video luminance levels safe you can also try the FREE “Levels – Computer to Video” animation preset, search for it in the Effects and Presets panel. This will push the luminance levels from between 0 and 255 to between 16 and 235 (Broadcast safe).

If it’s luma flashes causing it – easiest “quick & dirty” solution would be to run it through AE using the Broadcast Safe/ Broadcast Spec plug-in to make sure luma is safe.

Could be a permissions issue perhaps as this is one of the folders within the AE package that holds plugins, if Ae can’t access it it will freak itself out and crash! Have you logged in using an account that does not have access permissions to that folder maybe?

Not a stupid question at all.
1) Go to Composition > Make Movie.
2) In the Render Settings choose “Best”.
3) In the Output module choose Lossless.
4) Click on the hyperlinked text “Lossless” to open the settings.
5) In the Video Output section, under Channels, make sure that RGB & Alpha is selected to output your movie with an embedded Alpha Channel.
6) If you want to output a matte as a separate file, choose Alpha.If you are going to all this trouble it makes sense to also save this as a template for future use. Name it Lossless + Alpha. Then you can simply select it from the menu (or even make it a default).

Mask Interpolation panel works well for this as Darby says. Another easy workaround is to apply the free transform box to the Mask and reverse Scale it, this will swap the points around so it moves in the correct direction.

It sounds like a memory issue. RAM is used in AE for caching frame of the RAM preview but also for undo and other things. If you are working in a high res comp with a high frame rate then your RAM can get eaten up very quickly.
