I’ve only recently started studying and dealing with these issues, but my assumption on projects for DVD or broadcast so far has been to adjust color curves and color correct first, then convert from computer to studio rgb at the track level. I’m just assuming that doing it the other way around would bring the colors back out of the studio rgb range.
I shoot on a similar camera and make a lot of videos for Youtube, and I never convert from computer to studio rgb. I’ve never heard of people doing that. I don’t know if people do that, but in my experience, video looks exactly (well, almost, given Youtube’s recompression) how it should online in 0 to 255. But I just don’t know if anyone has said otherwise. I haven’t seen it on any tutorials that I occasionally watch on how people render for the internet.

Don’t ask me, because I can never seem to get a straight answer from Sony about what my problem with avi footage is. I don’t know if it’s all avi or just Cineform avi.

Only in fades? Does the footage play normally in the same spot without a fade?
I’ve had lots of problems with avi on Vegas (currently I still use Vegas 10e after Vegas 11 was horribly buggy), though it was Cineform avi, so I don’t know if that makes a difference. Vegas would crash and lock up constantly.

Which version of Vegas are you using, and what format is the clip? Is this in the render or preview? I don’t have an answer, though this might help someone else answer you. The only problems I’ve had with fades are when Vegas 9 would take a frame from a clip immediately before a fade in, so I had to move it further down the timeline.

Even with the same cameras pointed at the same object, they’re getting different light. The rule is that for every 15 degrees you turn your camera you should re-white balance. That’s a problem for multicamera shoots unless your cameras are all close together and shooting the same area on screen (one’s not zoomed in, another out). And in my case, there’s no way to try to adjust camera settings in live events. I’d have to have people on every camera with radios while I call shots from a switcher, and even that would have its limits.

I see. Yeah, AVCHD is kind of a pain. I used to convert all my AVCHD footage to Cineform avi, but with Vegas 10 and 11 that was becoming a nightmare because Vegas was locking up and crashing with Cineform avi.
I don’t know what the solution is, but I wish I knew since I shoot lots of events with several cameras. And I’m only operating one or two at any given show if I even have a second camera operator, but my cameras don’t let me change settings like filters or aperture while I’m shooting for the most part. If I’m shooting a show with lots of moving lights like a concert or fashion show, then the problem is compounded, since each camera may as well be on a different location.
Well, I guess I know the solution-get better cameras. But my finances won’t make that an option for a while.

Matching colors even with the same model of cameras can be difficult for me in Vegas. At some point I’ll invest in Boris Red. I’ve seen John Rofrano’s color match tutorial and it seems like a pretty good feature.

A 2 TB hard drive will cost about $150, at least in stores (ridiculously expensive to me). But the data recovery guy I’ve been going to an unfortunate amount recently told me that prices will go back down again, and that prices went so high because of the Japanese tsunami.

Go to the pan and crop tool, and in the bars for keyframes, on the left, choose mask instead of position. Then you can cut out exactly what you want.
