I don’t plan on shooting in 1920×1080 in order to crop to 2.39. I want to shoot 4K and crop to 2.39. If you’re saying to crop it to HD for Blu Ray or the internet that it would go down to 1920×803, then maybe scaling the image down instead of cropping it all the way down to HD would preserve more image quality.
Basically, I plan on shooting something that can play theatrically.

I want to crop it to 2.39 to get a wide aspect ratio. I could do that on my Vixia camcorder if I want, but since it’s already shooting at 1920×1080, I’d lose a lot of vertical resolution by doing that, and I want to output to 1920×1080.

Cropped in Vegas to get a 2.39 aspect ratio. The horizontal resolution would be the same, just vertical resolution is lost. So basically, I’m wondering how much vertical resolution is lost and how much is left.
Although, afterwards, I’d want to crop the whole picture down to 1920×1080 (as opposed to scaling it down), for internet videos and Blu Ray.
I just want the 2.39 aspect ratio and have decided to do it by shooting on 4k and cropping the picture as opposed to shooting on anamorphic, which will be close to as expensive but make shooting more difficult.

Even though my specific Radeon was listed as compatible with Vegas’ GPU acceleration when that premiered with Vegas 11, Vegas didn’t even recognize it. So now I have an nvidia GTS 450, which works with Vegas.
There’s all kinds of problems with Vegas and GPU acceleration (I can’t even upgrade my nvidia drivers or it’ll completely mess with Vegas), so you just have to go with what works.

I’ve never used FRAPS. Have you successfully rendered the same type of footage before, using the same render settings? Have you used these render settings for other footage?

Give all the details. What codec is the footage? Have you edited such footage before and rendered it? What are your render settings? What are you delivering to?

Sounds like I’ll be busy testing it out just to see how I’ll configure it. I probably should get 3 TB hard drives. I just got dumped 500 GB of footage for three days of shooting from another crew my client worked with. That’s barely the beginning of what I’m cutting.

[John Rofrano] “It’s important to note that there is no swapping of drives with a RAID! The drives are dedicated and when people speak of swapping the drive, it’s because the drive has failed and needs to be replaced. You don’t just swap a drive out of a RAID and replace it with a drive that has different data. A RAID is one logical hard drive made of of many physical hard drives. The logical hard drive does not exist unless all of the physical hard drives are present.
If you are looking for a solution where you need to swap drives you do not want a RAID, you just want an enclosure that supports JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks).
What I would do is use a RAID 5 for all current projects and then archive them to external hard drives when your done. So purchase a RAID 5 that has enough capacity to hold all of your current projects. As you complete a project, archive it to stand-alone hard drives and delete it from the RAID to make space for the next project.”
I just want to make sure I have this straight, because this is a lot of hard drives to back up. You’re saying copy the whole project, right? So if I need to work on the project in the future, I’d use all those archive drives in a RAID setup?

Thanks. I may very well end up with all of that. My client just dumped on me another 500 GB of footage, which I have space for because I just got another 1 terabyte hard drive for him, but I’m going to have to get a RAID setup soon because I can’t really edit all this and keep it properly backed up with the setup I have now.
Just by coincidence, I’m taking donations for a new RAID setup, UPS, NAS, new desktop, a few monitors, an office to rent (my room is nearly filled to the ceiling along every wall with equipment), and Enterprise class hard drives.

This is already getting kind of crazy, having to consolidate footage between four hard drives and keep swapping out different ones to get all the footage I have onto one.
I looked up a few RAID systems, and this one looks appealing.

It looks like I can pull hard drives in and out and is hard drive based. I’m not looking for hot swappable necessarily, but I do want to be able to pull out different hard drives.
And is there any drawback to using 2+ TB hard drives? Maybe I imagined it, but I thought I’ve read that you don’t necessarily want hard drives this big for video editing since they can run a little slower with all that data. Not necessarily slower, but take longer since they have more data.
