4K, 16:9 footage cropped to 2.39
Posted by Angelo Mike on August 27, 2013 at 5:17 pmWhat’s the resolution on a 2.39 aspect ratio footage cropped from 4K, 16:9? I’m not a mathematician, and am now considering an FS700 instead of an FS100 so I can get 2.39 footage by cropping a 4K image rather than shooting on anamorphic lenses.

I’m not sure I understand what you are asking. 16:9 is 1.7777 aspect so no… 2.39 does not equal 1.777. 😉
Cropped in what way? to maintain the 4096 width? That would be 4096×1714 @ 2.39 aspect or 4096×2304 @ 1.7777 (16:9) aspect.

Although, afterwards, I’d want to crop the whole picture down to 1920×1080 (as opposed to scaling it down), for internet videos and Blu Ray.
I just want the 2.39 aspect ratio and have decided to do it by shooting on 4k and cropping the picture as opposed to shooting on anamorphic, which will be close to as expensive but make shooting more difficult.

That would be 4096×1714.

Full aperture 4K is 4096 × 3112 (1.32:1) which is 12,746,752 pixels. 2.39:1 4096 × 1714 is 7,020,544 pixels. The difference is 1398 less lines of resolution and 5,726,208 less pixels.
But… I’m confused by your questions.
You are talking about buying a Sony NEX-FS700 camera that has a 4K sensor with an effective 8,400,000 pixels but still shoots 1920×1080 HD. So what’s your point of the cropping questions? At the end of the day, the camera shoots HD regardless of how big the sensor is.

August 28, 2013 at 1:42 pmI want to crop it to 2.39 to get a wide aspect ratio. I could do that on my Vixia camcorder if I want, but since it’s already shooting at 1920×1080, I’d lose a lot of vertical resolution by doing that, and I want to output to 1920×1080.

Yes, but the FS700 shoots HD as well which is why I’m confused about the 4K questions. 1920×1080 cropped to 2.39:1 is 1920 x 803. You will loose 277 lines of vertical resolution.

If you’re saying to crop it to HD for Blu Ray or the internet that it would go down to 1920×803, then maybe scaling the image down instead of cropping it all the way down to HD would preserve more image quality.
Basically, I plan on shooting something that can play theatrically.

No, I was basing my reply that on the fact that the Sony NEX-FS700 shoots HD and not 4K. If you were talking about a different camera then ignore my last reply.

I see fro your link that there is an upgrade kit to make it 4K. I didn’t realize that.
So you would use a project of 4096 x 1714 if you want 2.39:1 and crop appropriately. Vegas Pro 12.0 might even crop for you if you keep the option enabled to crop media on import. That’s why it’s so important to set your project up correctly before you start editing.

August 28, 2013 at 3:11 pmOh, and it looks like the FS700 shoots 4096 x 2160 Digital Cinema Initiatives 4K (native resolution) with the 4K upgrade so you would loose 446 lines of resolution at 4096 x 1714 DCI 4K (CinemaScope cropped) while going from 8,847,360 pixels to 7,020,544 pixels for 1.8MP less pixels.
