4K, 16:9 footage cropped to 2.39

Thanks. Now, what I’m wondering is, how would I keep the vertical resolution high if I crop it (not scale it down) to 1920×1080? Or is that always lost when cropping? I wonder how feature films do it. David Fincher crops from Red cameras to 2.39 instead of scaling down the 4K image, and I know he’s concerned with every pixel on screen. An FS700 isn’t a Red, and I’ll be shooting on EF (with a metabones speed boost adapter) and EF S lenses. But I’m still trying to figure this out.

It wouldn’t be much of an issue if I was just putting this online, but I’d like to shoot a project for festivals and maybe 2K resolution, though that’s not a priority with all the other technical stuff I’ll be dealing with.

That’s always lost when cropping.

That’s how feature films do it. That’s why I used the names that I did in my post. You are creating industry standard 4096 x 1714 Digital Cinema Initiatives 4K CinemaScope cropped. Everyone who is delivering DCI 4K 2.39:1 is doing the same cropping.

Sorry to interject, but how do I ‘crop media on import’? in Vegas 12? I have been editing a 4k/5K project and always crop each clip after import, which takes quite a while.

Open the Project Properties (Alt+Enter), and check the box that says Adjust source media to better match project or render settings. That will make small adjustments to avoid some letterboxing. It’s not going to crop 4:3 media to 16:9 or anything like that, but it will crop media that has a slightly mismatched aspect to make it fit.

You might want to get VASST Event Tools ($9.95) you can crop all of your media to match the project with a single click! Just check Match Selected Events to Project Aspect and press Apply and all of your selected events will be cropped to match the project.
