I don’t think that’s true at all. I use my laptop in ways I didn’t plan on, being able to burn DVDs and transfer data away from home. I know filmmakers use tablets and that they’re probably a lot of fun, but I don’t know how much they’d help me.

For one thing, when I’m out meeting people, it would be cool to have something portable that’s not a laptop to show them videos. It’s definitely a big improvement over showing them video on a phone. If I’ve got to get them to read or see something, anything, a tablet would help. I use lots of movies as references or influences on short films and music videos I shoot, so it might be helpful in that regard to show actors what I’m looking for.

It would make things more convenient, but there’s not necessarily anything I can’t do without it. It just makes it easier to do things like pull up video or do research.

But it is going to be $300 or $400 that I could use on other equipment over a two year (or so) payment plan…but, I was in a situation yesterday where, had I had it, it would have proven very useful. I was interviewing at a place that holds events that they’ll want a videographer for, and a tablet would have been way more useful to show them a video or two of mine than a phone. Sure, I don’t do that often (I can’t remember the last time I interviewed like that, actually), and the potential client could just look up my videos later, but if he could see one or two of them and ask me about them in person, it may have given him ideas on what he could use me for.

I’m actually leaning more towards doing it now. Not right away, anyways, but maybe in a few weeks.

Googling “how business owners use tablets” yields a lot of links that show useful info. So I’ll consider it more seriously since I can pay for it monthly. There’s no way I would pay for it up front.

Won’t you end up with the entire project being nested, which means you’ll have to cut out all the extra footage either before or after you nest it? Seems like extra effort to me.

Press D two times (or so) to make the mouse tool change from the regular pointer to having a dotted rectangle. That will let you highlight multiple events across several tracks, which you can then drag wherever you want.

You can also hold CTRL while clicking on each event you want to highlight together, and move/copy/paste them wherever. Or, if you want to go from one event across to another and include everything in between, hold Shift while clicking on the first event and then the last one, and it will highlight everything in between and the two you clicked.

If you want to keep them grouped together so that you can just select one event and move them all, when you highlight them all, press G to group them. When you want to ungroup them, highlight the events you want ungrouped and press U.

Apparently, I have no idea how to make this direct link work, even with CC’s tutorial. So just copy and paste it. Even when I copy CC’s exact example and replace it with my link, it doesn’t work.

And in general, Indy Mogul’s pretty cool. Their two producers use FCP and Premiere, so Vegas doesn’t get discussed much, but I’ve been having brief conversations with them about it for the last few weeks. You could spend weeks watching their videos.

Just for everyone’s info, Black Magic does the job ably, and it doesn’t go on the video file itself. It’s just on the monitor. The footage comes out exactly as if you didn’t have crop marks.

And so far, Black Magic is working fine. I don’t know why the guide I read made it sound more tedious to deal with than it is. Several of the YouTube videos I found, as well as Black Magic’s own guide, have either needless steps for installation and use, or don’t talk about basic things you need to know when using it. Maybe I’ll make my own video guide to it. Black Magic even has helpful guides in camera when you press the t3i’s INFO button on any of the BM menus.

The only tedious part is that you have to install it on every SD card you use, but that only takes a minute or two, if that.
