  • Tom, I was giving that as an example of how often I have to relink media, so I am familiar with his issue regardless of how it may be caused.

    Just a point of clarification.

  • Generally, if each drive has the same folder/file structure, linking one file will link all the files. I’m on Windows and with external drives sometimes they’re plugged in and assigned a different drive letter which will unlink the entire project.

I suspect something deeper is going on though. Are you mirroring the hard drives before or after Premiere reads the project for the first time?

I ask this because Premiere, by default, writes an ID number to the metadata of the file so it doesn’t do things like double conform files if a second copy is brought into the media library (bin). I wouldn’t be surprised if it helps re-link projects as well.

Premiere 6.5 is the version before Premiere Pro 1 which was released in 2003.

I remember it fondly, it had a horse on the splash screen…. many an old skate video.

  • The only way I can think of is the following:

    1. Right click on the dissolve you want and set it as the default.
    2. In your timeline use page up/page down to navigate between cuts.
    3. Hit ctrl+d (pc shortcut) to add your default transition.
    4. mash the page buttons and ctrl+d alternately until you are done.

Again, I run Windows so I wish I could test your workflow exactly, but I tried I-frame only MPEG with the Colorista 2 plug-in and got these results from a 10 second 5DmkII clip:

    38s timeline render
11s match sequence render w/ use preview
47s match sequence render w/o use preview

It doesn’t seem, at least on a Windows system, that Colorista 2 is the weak link in this if we change up all other variables.

No, Premiere doesn’t have any Pro-Res sequence presets, but it’s not picky on that level, so a Pro-Res file should work on whatever timeline you throw it on.

You have two choices, the first:
    1. Start a new project.
    2. Choose any sequence preset.
    3. Once Premiere’s workspace opens, drag a Pro-Res file into the bin.
    4. Delete the sequence you originally set up in step #2 from the bin.
    5. Drag your Pro-Res file from the bin to the “New Item” (sticky pad) icon at the bottom of the bin.
    6. This will create a matching sequence with your Pro-Res file already in the timeline.
    7. Try to play it back… if it freaks out or freaks out when you first bring the file into the bin, it’s probably a codec/is-premiere-playing-with-quicktime-nicely issue

    Or:
    1. Create a new preset by going to the “Settings” tab in the sequence window and under “Editing Mode” choose custom and tweak to your heart’s content.

As far as your issues with your Black Magic card, I don’t have one personally so I’d hope someone else chimes in or you might get more attention starting a new thread for that separate issue.

Also, for your preexisting FCP timelines you’re importing via XML, are they effects heavy? Maybe with plug-ins that aren’t installed on Premiere? I know Premiere handles standard video transitions from FCP pretty ok, but sometimes stuff can throw it for a loop.

You may find this thread useful:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/909581

    Especially Todd from Adobe’s response:

“Note: Rendering of previews is only for preview purposes. Preview files will not be used for final output unless you have Use Previews option checked on output—–which you should not use except in the case of rough previews. Using preview files for final output will in almost all cases cause a decrease in quality. It can speed things up in some cases, so it may be useful for creating a rough preview in less time.”

Seems like it wholly depends on a combination of the input/output formats, the complexity of the timeline and the effects used as to how using the previews will improve speed or not.

I wonder if the original native P2 footage would fair better. I can usually get colorista to run 1080 at 1/4 res with my fingers crossed but I’m on Windows, AMD Phenom II X4, 8gigs, NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 (hacked for Mercury hardware acceleration).

September 23, 2011 at 8:38 pm in reply to: colour management problem

Starting with CS5, Adobe guaranteed 100% accurate YUV -> RGB conversions, so you shouldn’t *technically* need a conversion box and reference monitor.

    What you need to do:
    1. For your video card’s control panel, make sure all color adjustments and video adjustments are turned off or turned to “Let application decide”. This will remove the possibility of it interfering by adding extra color and gamma processing.

    2. You need to calibrate your monitor with a photographic calibration device like a Spyder or Huey. If your monitor isn’t calibrated and has an applied calibrated ICC profile… you really can’t trust anything you see as “color accurate”

    3. Make sure Windows Media Player and VLC do not have any additional brightness or color adjustments turned on by default.

My system is color calibrated so I get the same look from WMP, VLC, Premiere Pro, and a reference playback monitor give or take 1%.

I suggest googling “quicktime gamma bug” as Quicktime is known to have some brightness issues cross-platform.

  • Set the default duration of still images:
    1. Choose Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or Premiere Pro > Preferences > General (Mac OS).
    2. For Still Image Default Duration, specify the number of frames you want as a default duration for a still image.

Set the default duration for transitions:

If you change the default, the new setting has no affect on transitions already placed.

    1. Choose Edit > Preferences > General.
    2. Change the value for the Video Transition Default Duration or Audio Transition Default Duration; then click OK.

    —-

As far as the scale of the image, I think you’re better off doing some batch resizing/cropping in Photoshop or another image editor with similar functionality. There is no easy way of doing this within Premiere unless you want to right click every photo in the timeline and select “scale to frame size” (this doesn’t crop so if the aspect ratio is different, it will add black bars).

September 23, 2011 at 8:00 pm in reply to: Premiere 5.5 Unable to import FCP 7 projects:

This may be limitation of the trial (because of codec licensing, etc.):

    https://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407938.html

I would test one ProRes file by starting a new project and exporting it, if Premiere still throws a fit, it’s a trial limitation.

Google seems to reveal this as the most common answer.
