Premiere 5.5 Unable to import FCP 7 projects:
Posted by Joseph Mastantuono on September 23, 2011 at 6:21 pmAfter seeing so many videos showing “How easy it is” to get simple projects into PP5.5, I got the trial to try it out,
And I keep getting this error no matter what type of project or XML I try to import:
“This Project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type”
I try v4, v5, other formats to no avail.
This is all 23.98 ProRes HQ stuff, it doesn’t matter if I’ve got just one sequence, or even, No sequences and just try to get an XML of no bins.
Anyone run into this? I’m Running a MacPro with a decklink extreme 3d if that helps.
Other than that I’m so far liking the Adobe Production suite… so this is making me sad… I couldn’t find anything about presets, etc. on a couple google searches either.

September 23, 2011 at 7:39 pmI finally got one XML file in there, it was a XML v3, and bin only, as soon as I try to export a sequence, I’m getting the error.

September 23, 2011 at 8:00 pmThis may be limitation of the trial (because of codec licensing, etc.):

I would test one ProRes file by starting a new project and exporting it, if Premiere still throws a fit, it’s a trial limitation.
Google seems to reveal this as the most common answer.

September 23, 2011 at 9:34 pmThat would make sense if it was the trial of 5, this is the trial of CS5.5,
which “Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 – The trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 includes all sequence presets, editing modes, and encoders and decoders (codecs) that are included in the full, activated version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5.”

So I can import an XML of a sequence with a single DV clip. It seems that the problem is that I don’t have any Pro-Res presets in Premiere, is there a way of getting Pro-Res Presets for Premiere?
This can’t just be me, and seems a huge oversight in the trial, since it seems to be a full version media locked.

September 23, 2011 at 9:55 pmAlso is this normal?
I can only get output through my Blackmagic card if I’m in a sequence preset specifically for it, and that’s uncompressed. If I choose a custom setting I can only output through DV Firewire.
https://yfrog.com/nz94458192p
https://yfrog.com/g0173cjpI can choose a blackmagic Uncompressed preset and then change the codec to Pro-Res, but seems strange.
Also there are no ProRes presets, should there be?

September 24, 2011 at 12:15 amNo, Premiere doesn’t have any Pro-Res sequence presets, but it’s not picky on that level, so a Pro-Res file should work on whatever timeline you throw it on.
You have two choices, the first:
1. Start a new project.
2. Choose any sequence preset.
3. Once Premiere’s workspace opens, drag a Pro-Res file into the bin.
4. Delete the sequence you originally set up in step #2 from the bin.
5. Drag your Pro-Res file from the bin to the “New Item” (sticky pad) icon at the bottom of the bin.
6. This will create a matching sequence with your Pro-Res file already in the timeline.
7. Try to play it back… if it freaks out or freaks out when you first bring the file into the bin, it’s probably a codec/is-premiere-playing-with-quicktime-nicely issueOr:
1. Create a new preset by going to the “Settings” tab in the sequence window and under “Editing Mode” choose custom and tweak to your heart’s content.—
As far as your issues with your Black Magic card, I don’t have one personally so I’d hope someone else chimes in or you might get more attention starting a new thread for that separate issue.

Also, for your preexisting FCP timelines you’re importing via XML, are they effects heavy? Maybe with plug-ins that aren’t installed on Premiere? I know Premiere handles standard video transitions from FCP pretty ok, but sometimes stuff can throw it for a loop.

September 24, 2011 at 4:28 amThey are extremely simple sequences, the only thing I can imagine throwing them for a loop is some stills, but sequences without stills won’t import either.
I’m going to post a link to one of the XML’s just to see if anyone can import it, as even unlinked from the media, it refuses to open.
Can a kind soul out there try to import this XML onto their system, just to see? If I know that they can open it, then I’ll know the problem is on my end. And I’ll have to reinstall, or get the full version or something.
here it is on my dropbox

September 24, 2011 at 5:03 amI always select the Project panel in FCP and then export XML and use version 5 and select the box to add all outside media (whatever the option is… ) I’m on PC right now 🙂
It works fine for me…

September 24, 2011 at 4:34 pmGetting a functional XML out of FCP isn’t the problem. These are XML’s that work in DaVinci, color, and go back into FCP without an issue. The issue is with premiere pro.
XML’s with dv files work, it’s XML’s with prores… Which are about 90% of files, I’m trying to make sure all my workflows work before firing on a purchase…

September 26, 2011 at 9:55 pmYou need to use XML v.4 or v.5. Can you try that?

September 27, 2011 at 5:10 pmyou do know that xml you posted is a Version 5 XML.. it won’t work in any Premiere Pro Set up.
as for preset timelines, do you not have a preset folder in you premeire project setup window will many many presets for BlackMagic Design? If you’re using Aja, there’s an additional Adobe Aja installer that will give you all the presets.
you need to go through your fcp timeline and look for things like composite containers, or speed warps. Multi-Clips, etc.
Things like that have a hard time conforming in ANY high end system. And, is the FCP and PPRo on the same machine?
