  • What is the format/codec of the files that you are having issues with? I’ve not really had any problems organizing footage at the finder level and then importing without copying in FCPX. My first thought is there may be some compatibility issue with the source footage type. The fact that you have to relink often is a red flag since it shouldn’t be necessary unless you’re moving the files or altering them in another program between edit sessions.

I’m not going to harass you for your workflow. Different strokes for different folks, but I don’t really understand what you meant when you said:

[adam chesbrough] “Yes I could keep all of my RAW files elsewhere and “copy” everything when I import, but that doesn’t make sense to me since I would rather have a complete working copy of my project (chronosync to drobo 5D nightly)”

How does allowing FCPX to copy and organize your files prevent you from having a “complete working copy” of your project. Since everything is kept in one place when FCPX organizes things, you just need to copy two folders.

  • That kind of animation is actually very easy in Motion. You can create a line and that line can be animated with the Write On behavior, or just by keyframing the Start and End parameters at the bottom of the shape tab in the inspector. If you want there to be a little dot at the head of your animated line, that can be acheived by creating a circular shape and then animating it with the Motion path behavior so that it follows the line animation exactly.

Here’s a tutorial showing how that might work.

    Motion 4: Motion Path behavior

As for the map move and all, that can be acheived with a 3D camera that follows the line over the map. The camera is moved using the Motion Path behavior as well.

    Hope this helps,

  • I’ve played around with it when Josh (creator) built it and showed it off. I’ve been considering using it to publish some FCPX training I’ve been writing too. As I understand it, the majority of their user base surrounds music (lessons and other training), but he’s expanding it to include film/video training as well.

It’s a small company so email is the best way to get ahold of them for support. But Josh is always answering emails so I don’t think you’d have any trouble getting help if you had issues.

  • It’s legit. I know the guy that made it. It’s a facilitator of content along with the player of that content. The idea is that, like iTunes, you can open the MOD machine and new content just shows up when it’s ready to be purchased. Enables convenience for both content creators and their customers. Great tool for training software because I think you can have content play like quicktime, but also have interactive playback as well (ie: click next when ready to move on).

I’m not saying a “delete range”, or even “select multi-range” wouldn’t be helpful. I’m just trying to answer OPs question and correct his misconception.

[Steve Connor] “if you have longer connected clips that connect outside of where you are cutting in the primary then they may still need to be trimmed after you’ve made the cut.”

The first step regarding OPs question was to blade all at the in point and blade all at the out point. If you do that, then there are no connected clips that connect outside of where you want to delete in the primary. You are creating new connected clips at the blade all point.

[Matt Orfalea] “fter cutting in and out points, you need to select all the clips in between before deleting.”

No you don’t. Just select the clip in the primary. After you blade all the layers, those bladed connected clips will establish connections with the bladed clip in the primary. If you delete the primary clip, all clips connected to it will delete as well.

Personally I think you’re over thinking this. Just select a black generator from the generators tab and insert a connected clip of black over the section you want to remove. You plan on adding a different shot there eventually, so now you’ll have a clip, already the correct length that you can just replace with the replace edit when you find your new shot.

There’s no reason to actually delete the video only element of your initial clip.

Not as a direct export. you’d have to either screen capture, or create a 4,9-up display using transform tools on individual tracks composited together and then export that.

I know that Apple added REDCODE RAW support in 10.0.6. But you can easily download the trial and check for yourself.
