[Joseph W. Bourke] “Oh…I don’t know – expandability using standard components, rack mounting, things that make it work well within a professional environment.”
I work in a professional environment and I’ve never needed to have my “desktop” computer rack mounted. Sure it’s great if you’re running a server farm or you’re an IT or network guy, but my edit bay doesn’t have to have it. It’s a MUCH smaller footprint which means it could be on top of my desk instead of under it, giving me access to the back panel for connections. And since it’s expansion is all external, you can buy rack mountable chassis for your peripherals if you want.

[Joseph W. Bourke] “it’s small – way too small…calling anything slightly larger than a beer can “Pro” smacks of arrogance.”
Why does something have to be big to be considered “pro”?

It looks like the patent is in specific to how keyframes are manipulated. Not keyframing itself. Patent language is always over-broad in the abstract, but when you read the specifics, it has to do a lot with how keyframes are moved and eased.
For example, they described a situation where the user sees a collapsed view of their keyframes in bar form (like FCPX currently displays them). Then the user only needs to drag in between two keyframes to create an ease curve.
It also describes how multiple keyframe groups can be selected and moved forward or back in time with a click-drag operation.

June 8, 2013 at 4:36 pm in reply to: So I went off on a rant about FCPX on the “FCP” forum…[Scot Walker] “Want to delete the media in an Event that isn’t being used? Simple, right? Just tell FCP X to select the unused media and then press the DELETE key, right? Nope. That basic feature isn’t there. The workaround is to duplicate the entire project and hundreds of gigs of referenced and rendered media and then delete the one you duplicated.”
No. If you want to delete the unused media in an event, select the media and CMD+Delete it. If you’re not sure which media is used, then you have to do the exact same thing you had to do in FCP7 which is create a consolidated project and then delete the original. The only difference between the way FCPX does things and FCP7, is that FCPX won’t trim media to only what’s used in the sequence, a mixed blessing to be sure.

[Don Walker] ” Roundtrip Compound Clips to Motion”
Geez, how would that even work? I mean, you’d have to have some kind of contextual menu item like, “Send to Motion” or something. And then the compound clips would have to be translated into layers or something in Motion. And then when you save, it would have to ripple the changes back through to FCP X.
I just don’t think it’s possible.

[Andrew Kimery] “If Adobe doesn’t offer compelling reasons to keep using Adobe software people will find other options.”
Like what exactly? If you rely on After Effects and Illustrator for your work, what exactly “other options” are you going to move to? With the previous model, you could subsist on a version until you could afford an upgrade. Now you are forced into the upgrade, or forced into obsolescence.
When Avid facilities moved to FCP Legacy, it was already a maturing application. What are the illustrator and After Effects equivalents?
As I said before, I think this cloud model will produce competitors, but only because their upsetting the entire ecosystem which before was content to always use CS products for design and graphics. I just don’t know personally of any comparable Illustrator competitors. You could make an argument for Motion as a competitor to After Effects, but we all know that Motion only covers a portion of what After Effects does. So where do the people who’ve so completely relied on CS products go?

I can’t say I really disagree with anything stated in the article. I would add that the subscription model will also generate their own competition in the form of software companies who see an opportunity by not following the same model.
Photo editing software that no one would have considered previously because of Photoshop, or vector software no one would have looked twice at because of Illustrator, could make inroads because some consumers will look anywhere but at the cloud model for pricing.

I don’t know Automator, but either Charlie’s idea or perhaps it’s possible to delay the action you want Automator to perform until 30 seconds of non-action in the folder you’re watching. That way, it’ll move the file only after FCPX finishes exporting.

[Gabriel Spaulding] “What trim tools does Premiere Pro CS6 have that Final Cut Pro X does not?”
Not Neil (assume he’s who you’re asking this question of), but FCP X is lacking in some trimming functionality for those who use trimming a lot. My own personal biggest gripe is that the two window display for trimming only appears when trims are performed by click and drag. Many editors, myself included, like to do frame trims with keyboard shortcuts while viewing the display so that you can easily line up visual cues on both sides of the trim.
FCPX should allow for a trim display that comes up automatically when an edit point is selected with the trim tool or edge selection shortcuts, or even just having a separate view like they do with the angle viewer. Then we could perform trims more easily with the < and > keys.
Add that to my list.
