hard to say without sitting at and going through your system. When you say “upload” do you mean “import”? Whenever something takes longer than it should to transfer, I always check the connection first.

How are you connecting the SD cards to the iMac? Is there a direct SD slot on the computer or do you have an SD to USB adapter? Have you tried injesting to different systems in case it’s a bus issue on the computer?

  • FCPX can read AVCHD files, though it will want to create optimized media. If you digitize the video into FCP7, you’ll be able to import those clips into FCPX no problem.

However, if you want to transcode them first, be sure to use Pro Res 422, and not LT because LT is not considered an “optimized” codec in FCPX.

[Bill Davis] “But I’ve never figured out how one can search, sort, or find anything by a color in an organizational system beyond a single person doing the simplest form of visual search?”

Perhaps not, but not all organizational tools need be index searchable. For example, I’d heartily support color coded clips in the timeline to represent roles. It can be done elegantly and it would allow editors to understand which clips are tagged with which roles at a glance without having to isolate the role itself. The colors themselves could also be check box viewable. In other words, you see no change in color unless you go into the Timeline view tab and and check the “View roles by color” check box. It would be better than the current “Show Clip Roles” function which only changes the barely readable text to display the role.

Maybe not PSDs, but I’ve had issues opening .ai files created on newer versions of Illustrator from what I own.

I don’t see the “slug” that you’re referring to. But yes, I would cut the compound in the master sequence myself (although I wouldn’t necessarily break apart clip items to do so).

[Nikolas Bäurle] “I need to disagree with Andy on the “Add Edit” solution. This movement is not a bug but simply a bezier Keyframes.”

You didn’t disagree with me. You stated the same thing I said, only differently. I never said the behavior was a bug, and I said it sounded like bezier interpolation. Read my last sentence, I even say to change the interpolation to linear.

[Nikolas Bäurle] “Keyframing in X work perfectly fine…”

    1) Keyframing does NOT work perfectly fine in X as exemplified by the OPs issue. In fact, I’ll go so far to say it sucks for any but the simplest of keyframe tasks. It defaults to bezier when it should default to linear. And it isn’t even smart enough to realize that when you place two keyframes with the same value at either end of a segment of time, you don’t want movement. So, no, it’s not perfectly fine.

[Nikolas Bäurle] “…and is a lot better than in FCP 7.”

Well, that wasn’t a particularly high bar to overcome.

Well, I can see why you have compounds. I just wanted to make sure you weren’t over-complicating matters when you didn’t need to.

But once the compound is in your master timeline, is there a reason you can’t just edit the compounds as if they are master clips? You retain the magnetic nature of the timeline and to me it seems as if it’ll cut just as easily.

[Richard Jacana] “Messing around with Andy’s method too but the clips now are attached to the slug so when I shorten a clip no more magnetic timeline 🙁 have to then push it up against the others.”

Not sure what your problem is here. What do you mean the clips are attached to the slug? Where? In the compound clip? In the master timeline? Post images if you can.

May 6, 2013 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Keyframed movements continue after keyframes end

Try making add edits on either side of the keyframed movement. It’s hard to tell what’s going on without seeing your project. It sounds like you have a bezier curve between two keyframes with the same value (0,0). Since FCPX defaults to bezier keyframed movements, it’s screwing up the interpolation between the end of one animation and the beginning of another. Adding add-edits so that the keyframes are isolated might fix that for you. Of course you may have to do the keyframing over again.

You could also try changing the interpolation to linear and see if that clears it up.

Firstly, I don’t know why you’re using compound clips to begin with. Is it because you have 13 different sections with multiple clips in each section? If not, I can’t see why you’d need compound clips at all.

Secondly, when trimming / making your tweaks, why are you not editing in the master sequence? After all, compounds are treated like regular clips which means you can make cuts and tweaks in the master and not worry about the fixed length of the compounds.

Those first questions are just to understand whether you’re using compound clips when you don’t need to be. But to answer your question, no it’s not a bug. It’s designed to work that way. But there is an easier way of adjusting it if you do need to edit inside your compound.

Simply select the compound you edited in the browser and drag it on top of the compound in the timeline. Then choose: Replace from Start from the menu. You may get a warning that it’s about to shorten an edit, just click ok.

[Bret Williams] “And really, you’re going to send to motion for basic keyframing tasks?”

No. But you weren’t talking about basic keyframing. Basic keyframing is currently possible in X. You were talking about 20-30 keyframes placed in random order on a clip. Something which can be handled quite easily with a behavior in Motion. You don’t even need to send to Motion because you can build a jitter effect and publish it and just lay it on clips in X. Then you can lay it on as many clips as you want.

So, since basic keyframing is handled, I just feel that Apple wants more complicated keyframing or moves to be done in concert with Motion. And as long as a “Send To Motion” feature doesn’t require an export (in other words, it uses an updating placeholder clip in X), then sending to motion won’t be overcomplicated at all in my opinion.
