They are there if you hover over the edge of your audio. It may be that your clip height is too small to grab it easily, try increasing that with the switch at the bottom of the project window.

You don’t have to convert them, I believe FCPX can read most HDV natively. However, it’s my practice to convert all HDV to ProRes via the Optimized Media button when importing because HDV is captured in Long GOP format which is not ideal for editing.

The good thing about FCPX is that the transcode to ProRes can be done in the background while you edit so you don’t lose any time on injest as you would in FCP7.

September 20, 2013 at 4:46 pm in reply to: match frame: play beyond out point

First of all Georg, I firmly believe this is a bug. Something that cropped up in the last couple revisions. I don’t remember it stopping playback at the end of the selection in earlier versions. So, do what I’ve done and file a feedback report to Apple in the Final Cut Pro menu. Hopefully they’ll fix the behavior because it’s not one that makes a whole lot of sense.

However, there is a workaround. When you matchframe to the event browser, hit the slash key (/) to play the selection. When it reaches the end, you can then hit spacebar to continue playing the clip past the outpoint without destroying the IN/OUT in the event browser.

There are a couple of other ways to bypass this annoying behavior which to me clearly signifies it as a bug rather than a feature. But seriously, send feedback to make sure they know it’s not a useful behavior.

[Ricky Barrow] “I linked to the 3 files, transcoded and then edited them in a sequence to create the “one” clip just as the camera had recorded.”

Ok. That’s what I thought you meant. I was wondering if you had been talking of a way to combine the spanned clips into a single clip inside the Avid.

What I mean by viable online files: In an offline/online workflow where the AMA clips are transcoded to a low bit rate DNxHD file, I need original files to be able to reconnect to at the online stage.

The problem with your solution is that I’m forced to work with 3-4 times the number of clips because each time a clip is spanned, I have to live with multiple files for a single “shot”. Maybe there’s a useful “in-avid” solution that doesn’t have me editing with tons of sub-sequences. Perhaps a group clip or multi clip solution? I don’t use those features much (at the prep level) so I’m not sure if there’s an easy or timesaving solution to stitching the spanned clips together that isn’t going to cause headaches in the online.

  • You can apply a parameter behavior or keyframe the Offset control of the replicator. Just take hold of the slider and move it to see how it animates the arrows.

[Ricky Barrow] “A shorter workaround is to step into the folder structure and link directly to every individual .MTS file and transcode then stitch them back together.”

Forgive my ignorance but stitch them back together how? Presuming of course that I want to keep a viable online file to reconnect to after the online stage.

  • Essentially, you’ll want to make a replicator of an arrow shape. There’s an arrow in the shapes category of the Library. Replicate the arrow, scale it down. Draw a bezier line that represents the path that you want the arrows to go. You can turn this layer off.

In the Replicator tab of your arrow replicator, change the replicator shape to geometry and drag the bezier line into the shape well. Click the align angle checkbox. You may also need to adjust the angle by 90 degrees as well because of the orientation of the original arrow shape.

Add as many points to your replicator as you want and animate it with the offset parameter. Here’s a quick screenshot of how it might look.

    Hope this helps.

I haven’t gotten in touch with Canon yet. It’s a good idea, but difficult to navigate their website to find the right people to contact. I’m actually worried that it’s an Avid issue, not a plugin issue. I mean, it properly links to AMA inside Avid. Spanned files show up as single clips like they should. I can load clips and edit with them. It’s only when I consolidate or transcode where the problem happens.

I’ve actually already done the full reinstall route so that doesn’t help. I’ll post back if I hear back from Canon or Avid on the matter.

But I installed the 2.0.3 version of the plugin. I didn’t even have the plugin installed on my machine until last night, so I have no idea how I’d even get ahold of the old version. Here’s the link to the page where I got the plugin (in the software section towards the bottom). This is the correct one isn’t it?

  • [Trevor Gilchrist] “Or should I be conforming to 29.97 then adding pulldown to get to 23.98?”

Is there a reason why you need to be in 23.98? Because I’d be tempted to just conform to 29.97 because the math is simpler.
