[James Ewart] “What If I have already made a note in the column for that clip like “swoosh to CU – VG”?
Could I personalise it? Or do my log notes get transposes onto the data of the original clip with Avid?”
Avid rights and permissions are bin-based. On the hard drive the “project” is really just a folder with .avb files which represent the various bins in the project. As one editor accesses a bin by opening it, they lock the other editors out and retain the only means by which to write to that bin. All other editors can view the contents of the bin and even use the clips inside to continue editing, but they can’t save any new clips to that bin or rename anything.
The owner of the bin however, can do both. If they injest a new clip to that bin or rename an existing clip, it will show up to other editors after the owner has saved the bin. Once you close a bin, you lose the lock and the next editor to open it will have permission to make changes.
How this translates to a workflow: Editors who work on the same show typically work on sequences which represent a block or “act” of a show. Each sequence is usually in a separate bin because otherwise only one editor would be able to make changes to those sequences. Editors also typically create their own folders inside a project to organize bins specific to how they like to work. That way, if you needed to organize some clips into a particular order, you’d create a custom bin for that which would live in your folder for easy access. This keeps editors from messing around with the organized bins in a project which contain the main media for editing. That stuff was already organized by the AEs and shouldn’t be touched or changed by individual editors because it could screw everyone up.

News and sports editing don’t really rely on project sharing. At most, they only need media sharing which FCPX can provide. Project sharing is more the workflow of series/reality TV. For this reason, most of those facilities which work on that kind of show use Avid which offers the best project sharing workflow.
However, FCP7 made serious inroads into production facilities (at least here in LA) despite the fact that it never had the ability to project share. It looks like there may be a roadmap to providing better project sharing in X, but as of now it’s not any better than FCP7 or Premiere’s solutions.

[Dale Roberts] “I shoot on the C100 and do mutlicam with a GH3. How is it using MultCam?”
It’s probably the best multicam design out there.
[Dale Roberts] “Bluray. This is my main concern as I love Encore. What are people using to Author a Bluray with a custom menu and chapters?”
If you have a Mac (ie: using FCPX), then Encore is pretty much your only option for Blu-rays. You can technically make the files and burn a Blu-ray in Compressor, but your options are very limited.
[Dale Roberts] “Color Correctiom- I love using the RGB curves in PP. Anything similar in FCPX?”
No curves, but now with the FX3 Plug support, some 3rd party might create one. However, I’m happy with the color board as it’s very intuitive to use.
[Dale Roberts] “I’m no guru on After effects at all but I like to just make simple title pages with a text animation”
Motion is tailor made for editors who can do some effects but don’t need everything that AE has to offer. It’s great for doing titles and it’s compatibility with FCPX is solid, especially when it comes to making templates.
[Dale Roberts] “How is the general transition to editing in a totally different way? “
That’s a difficult question to answer. Some people take to FCPX like a duck to water, and others struggle as they try to make it work the way their previous NLE works. It took me about 3 weeks to become comfortable with it and I actually prefer the workflow to Avid, or FCP7, or Premiere but I still use all those programs. The best piece of advice I can think to give is to try and let go of your preconceptions and take it for how it presents itself. Explore it like you would if you didn’t already know track-based editing. You’ll fail, but the closer you can get to doing that, the less frustration you’ll have learning.

[Bret Williams] “The lack of trimming is probably due to the ability to use native non-qt, long GOP media. It would have to be a transcode function in there too. Not just a copy function because you can’t just copy a portion of certain formats.”
What would be cool is a “decompose” function similar to what Avid has. Select a project, and create an offline version of the project with only the media used, but all offline. Then you could just reimport the partial clips as you can do in the import dialogue.

But just to be clear, Bret. FCPX still doesn’t trim assets to only the used amounts in a project right? It will still copy the entire 10 min clip even if you only use a 3 sec shot of it?

[Bill Fiebig] “You can actually pull it underneath the primary, however, I am not sure why you would want to do that as the only clip that you will see is what ever is the top clip.”
There’s actually quite a good use for video clips connected below the primary. If your primary storyline clips have green screen or otherwise masked or keyed footage, it’s often easier to place the background footage below the primary as a connected clip rather than move the green screen footage out of the primary.

[Craig Alan] “There are times the automatic range selection saves time but I think its an unnecessary feature. you can always use the up and down arrows to move the playhead to the next or previous cut point and then hit I or O.”
In your opinion, sure. I happen to think it’s a good feature. Instead of hitting IN than pressing down arrow, then left arrow (to back up one frame to the end of a clip), and then hitting O, I can do it with one key. In the situations where I need to place an OUT somewhere else, well, I’d need to move to that point anyway. It’s a win-win in my book. It’s not disconcerting at all to see it mark a clip to the end when I place a single mark. Like the magnetic timeline, it’s just something you get used to and then adjust your workflow to take advantage.

[Craig Alan] “But that take us back to the original post: how do you control I and O if FC sets the second point automatically?”
You have to read my whole post. There are TWO types of 3-point edits. One where 2 of the 3 points are set in the timeline, and one where 2 of the 3 points are set in the browser.
If you’ve set INs and OUTs in the browser, then you don’t need to set ANY INs or OUTs in the timeline to perform the 3-point edit. Just perform the edit with your edit of choice (say Q), or hold SHIFT and it’ll backtime from the playhead.

[Bret Williams] “In motion, the key framing is separated and appears in different places, or you have to go to an inspector window to adjust things, and they have a whole panel called layers, which seems to be the timeline just without the time”
It’s been so long since I learned Motion that I’m divorced from the difficulties I had, but I lay most of those difficulties at the feet of AE. After Effects demanded a certain workflow that wasn’t easy necessarily, but you get used to it and it seemed natural (at least for simple projects). Motions layout and workflow were significantly different and when I tried to do things in Motion, all I could think about was how to adapt my AE workflow to get the same result in Motion. Eventually, I’d get frustrated and do the project in AE to meet my deadline.
It wasn’t until I stopped using AE, cold turkey that I started using Motion the way I should’ve been using it from the start. It became much more intuitive when I stopped trying to use it like AE. Most times I don’t even bother to open the timeline view when working in Motion.
Downside is that I’m mediocre with AE these days. I only just recently got CC so now I have a chance to rebuild my AE muscles.
