Here’s what I’d do:

Create a 2nd bootable partition.
Install Snow Leopard on one, Mavericks on the other.
Install FCS on Snow Leopard drive, FCPX on Mavericks.

Keep them separate. Snow Leopard was the last solid config for FCS in my opinion although you could probably go up to Lion if you really needed to. FCS has been buggy for me in Mavericks and so I don’t trust it, especially since it won’t ever be fixed.

Then see how often you boot up into the SL partition. For me, it happens less and less each day.

Depending on your version of Media Composer, you can export as ProRes or even just DV. Both formats will work fine in X.

It’s the same procedure I use in FCP7 or Avid. I use markers to enumerate the spots where edits need to be made. Then I go back through marker to marker making changes. In X I can use the TO DO markers and then use the Timeline index to jump and complete the changes. In fact, because markers are clip based instead of timeline based, I lose my place far less often than I do in either FCP7 or Avid.

1) Not sure.

2) I’m not aware of any way to sort or filter by offline status. However, if you want to relink all your offline files at once, simply select the event where the offline clips are (it’ll have a warning icon next to it) and go to File/Relink Files. FCPX will find all the missing clips and display them for you, allowing you to relink them. Or choose Reimport from Camera Archive if they are missing due to an offline camera or camera archive.

If you want a free photo editing software, try Gimp. I would not try editing photos in FCPX.

You’re not going to screw anything up by staying in FCPX; there’s no unrecoverable Library situation. At the very worst you can still show package contents for a library and manually manage your media that way.

Based on the workflow you mentioned, why not just create a Library to digitize the C300 footage, create your proxies and optimized as you want and then consolidate the event files to an outside location? You’d still have to put them in camera folders if that’s how you have things organized on the SAN,but at least you could work completely within FCPX instead of moving to FCP7.

Yes and no. It’s not going to be as simple as plugging in a drive and hitting a button on FCPX because you’re essentially dealing with two events: one with proxy media and one with optimized.

You can copy only the proxy files to your laptop, sure. That’s easy. Select the event that contains your media. Choose Fie/Copy Event to Library/New Library. Create the new library on your laptop and in the ensuing dialogue box, choose to only copy the Proxy media.

Once you do that however, you’ll have two events. One on your external drive connected to optimized and proxy with whatever projects you’ve cut along the way, and another connected only to the proxy. I haven’t tried it, but after finishing the edit in your proxy event, you could try to copy the event back over to the original library and see if it connects back to the optimized. At the very least you should be able to relink the files.

D is the shortcut for an overwrite edit. However, if you looking to replace one clip with another, I recommend using the Replace Edit which can either replace a clip at the same length as the original (OPT+R) or replace using the length of the new clip (SHIFT+R). Just select the clip you want to replace first.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate trimming in Avid. I like it. It’s just not enough by itself to sell it as the NLE of choice over the others out there. I agree that it’s still the one area where there is some separation between Avid, X, and Premiere. But in most of the other feature areas, Avid is consistently losing ground because they’re not innovating like they used to. I mean, they were the first ones to allow different codecs and frame rates and sizes all mixed seamlessly in the same timeline. Now days, it seems the only thing they do is mess around with AMA, which to me has always felt like a half-measure feature.
