Don’t bother with automator unless you already know how to use it. You could be finished with the task before you know how built the automator script. Download a program called Name Changer (it’s free). It can bulk change file names at the finder level, it’s intuitive to use and you can see a preview of the changes as you do it. And it’s damn near instantaneous.

In FCPX you can rename files with the click of a button. Set up a custom name that helps you distinguish between the two (ie: CAM 01, CAM 02) and then when you import from one cam you apply the custom name CAM 01 to those clips and CAM 02 to the clips you import from the other camera. Then you won’t have to deal with identical clip names inside FCPX.

July 7, 2014 at 4:31 pm in reply to: Is there a way to adjust the shape of a line between two animation points so I can have a smoother fade in/fade out?Actually, it works exactly the same way. You can create keyframes and then right-click a segment between them and choose your easing method. Or you can apply a dissolve transition and adjust it’s easing in the inspector. The only things it won’t work on are fade handles.

Good catch. I didn’t even know you could enter notes on a project from the inspector. I’d definitely point this out as a bug since it seems like they never bothered to connect that detail note to the “notes” metadata that clips use.

I have seen this before where the keyword editor doesn’t properly reflect the keywords applied to the multiclip. If I’m not mistaken, my fix was to double click the keyword icon in the event which sort of refreshes the keyword editor and makes the missing keyword show up.

[Morgan Mendieta] “This is still what will keep me form working in FCPX my work is news so i need to edit as quickly as possible. This does help but the problem still stands.”
I used to work in news too. Speed is definitely necessary, but complete mouseless control isn’t necessary for speed. You just need to understand FCPX enough to know how to use it to it’s advantage for speed. Don’t rely on connected clips, there are better/faster ways to get things done. If you’re trying to trim connected clips, you’re not using FCPX to it’s advantages.

[James Ewart] “Okay so a two step process then.”
It doesn’t have to be. Prior to ingest, if you set the location for your proxy files, then you can have X make them at the same time it’s ingesting your full rez originals.
The full rez goes to one location, the proxies go elsewhere and Bob’s your uncle.

[Morgan Mendieta] “this single thing is holding me back…..”
Really? This is the only thing keeping you from editing all the time in FCPX? 😛
You can select edit points in the primary with the bracket keys ( [ ] and \ ) but they default to the video layer when you have the audio expanded. To select the audio edges, you need to hold down SHIFT and use the bracket shortcuts.
As for connected clips, you have to select them with the mouse, unless you place them inside a secondary storyline. Then, as long as no clips are selected in the primary and the playhead is over the secondary storyline, you can use the bracket shortcuts there as well.
Hope that helps. Enjoy working in FCPX from now on.

June 30, 2014 at 8:27 pm in reply to: 10.1.2 import from card still only goes to internal libraryCertain cards require managed media because the card files need to be rewrapped as quicktimes. What you need to do is set your media locations in the Library first and then do the import.
