When you say it’s locked, what do you mean?
The typical way to create a particle system is to select the layer you want to create particles from, and then click the Make Particles button on the toolbar, or hit E on the keyboard.

Well, if you’re looking for topography in your map, you’re probably either going to want to look at a 3D modeling app, or else you can do a more stylistic 2D in 3D space in Motion or AE.
The ideal point if working the 2D in 3D space route will be to draw the map as vector shapes either in Motion itself or in Illustrator. Then you can zoom in close and fly low on the map without aliasing of the image.

You have two choices. Either import whatever background you’re wanting to composite into Motion where the blend modes will work, or use the faked technique involving clones.

I agree, Primatte RT isn’t very good although I’ve heard the full version works well. I use DVMatte Pro and it’s fantastic. Best of all, when you install it, it appears in both FCP AND Motion (but keying in FCP still won’t show up in Motion). It’s also very affordable.

Don’t use a blend mode as that won’t translate back to FCP. Instead, there is a checkbox for reflection only in the Reflection parameter. Choose that and see if it works for you.

When you send your clips to Motion from FCP, Motion creates a project with the proper settings. You don’t have to do anything. If you’re wondering though, the Motion setting should match your FCP settings. In other words, 1920×1080 @ 23.98fps.
As far as your second question…keys to not translate from FCP to Motion because Motion uses a different keying filter. You should just try keying in Motion.

I re-read your post several times, and I can’t get over the feeling that there are just words missing. Words that might help me to understand what you’re trying to do.
For example, I have no idea what this means:
“approx center canvas, moving, sniffing dog nose”
I get that you’re trying to move your text and have it settle somewhere. What I’m not sure is exactly what kind of move you’re trying to achieve. Are the letters flying in independently or together? Is it scaling up from nothing? Try to describe it again and I’ll see if I can help you.

July 19, 2010 at 5:06 pm in reply to: Motion Development / Final Cut Integration for Broadcast NewsPerhaps some kind of integration with Final Cut Server might be helpful. There are web clients for the producers. The editor would be able to cut the project, and then the producer could view a proxy from their desk for QC.
Also, one of the biggest drawbacks for iNews is that it’s PC only based. However, iNews DOES have a browser-based client that can be set up so editors on Macs could view rundowns and pull CGs directly from the stories versus having an email sent to them.
We experimented with that at my station as well as having a virtual PC installed (ie: Parallels or VMWare Fusion). Both solutions helped the overall workflow, but they both have drawbacks.
Virtual PCs can bog down a computer’s performance, and the iNews web-client is a bit clunky. Still, I preferred the web-client.

July 19, 2010 at 4:45 pm in reply to: Motion Development / Final Cut Integration for Broadcast News1) Don’t know. Not sure anyone knows for sure. We had both Avid and FCP at the news affiliate I worked at in San Diego.
2) The most recent update for Motion (v4) included some very significant improvements. I don’t have any reason to believe it won’t continue.
3) iNews is owned by Avid so integration is unlikely, at least to the extent that it’s integrated with Newscutter. However, I saw 3rd party FCP integration for ENPS several years ago at NAB.
