No Simon, they are not. There is a shared code base certainly, and they have equally clearly built FCP X on the foundations of iMovie, or maybe iMovie in its present form is just a bi-product of the work that has been going on for the last 3 years in rewriting FCP, intriguing theories abound but either way they are “quite simply” NOT the same product. Did Avid DV Free share interface layout and design elements with Avid Media Composer? Yes. Did they share some basic fundamental operability, Yes. Was Avid DV Free a great place for aspiring Avid editors to learn the most basic principals of working with Avid editing systems, Yes. Were they the same product, of course not.
Ok, don’t know why I’m getting so feisty about it, maybe we both need a chill pill 😉

Jerry’s right of course … but copy and paste to your Scratch Disc is probably not the best way to back up those files, better to back them up on an altogether different disc; when you later Log and Transfer them (from source or backup) FCP will copy/transcode the selected media to your Capture Scratch.

No. Thats a “display” output, not a “video” output ie it appears as a extended desktop monitor output to the OS but not as a broadcast video output to the NLE.

In iMovie yes. Mate, there are a lot of basic interface similarities between iMovie and the presentation we saw of FCP X but you do maybe need to take a bit of a chill pill on this front … they are after all NOT the same application. Certainly in the demo I watched FCP X’s Precision Editor appeared as an integral part of the timeline itself, that is the timeline expanded to include the Precision Editor controls … not like in iMove where they are appear in a separate window. Who knows how it will function in the final release of FCP X.

Just click the little (swap events and projects) button just to the right of the camera button (the open camera import window button).

But iMovie CAN already export XML files (Share menu > Export Final Cut XML…)

Another option would be to swap out your LHi for a cheaper card that will give you a compatible HDMI output to use directly with the Dreamcolor or maybe a Panasonic Pro Plasma that you can calibrate using ISFccc (have a look for a V25, you might be able to get one pretty cheaply).
