“Why do some take it so personally? Switch over prices for Premiere and Avid are very low right now.”

If you spend 12 years becoming a professional pianist and Steinway suddenly changed all the keys and told you all your old music wouldn’t work on the piano — you might take it personally too. This is why FCP editors are outraged. Apple just obsoleted a decade of their professional training and made their skills worthless going forward in professional shops that will have to change NLE’s.

Mastering a new NLE takes months and years — this was a marketable skill that kept people’s mortgages paid and children in school. Now not only has the company created a product that’s not usuable in many professional situations – they guaranteed that our “Steinway” will eventually stop working when apple breaks it with a future Quicktime or system update.

the reason to have it run on G-5

1 – so all your Final Cut seats are the same version — exchanging newer files (on your intel FCS3) with older versions of Final Cut won’t work.

2 – saving dough on upgrading a bunch of perfectly working G-5 computers

if it works without any problems – why not do it?

  • I edit and produce and direct documentaries for various networks — and the best wedding video I did contained no video.

Just snapshots – animated to music — go to DVD Studio Pro – get their Wedding Template menu — stick on their favorite music – move the pictures — done

It was a gift for a couple – old friends — they had the 2 camera video shoot and professional stills there all day – they hated what those folks came up with

    Loved the simple photoanimated montage.

    Simple is usually better Andy

  • Walter,

Thank you for trying to clarify this – but just got off phone with Apple Store and even they are confused.

I bought the box but didn’t open it – and really can’t get my head around what I should do

Here’s the history – which is probably the history of most folks on this forum

    1. bought original FCP1
    2. upgraded EVERY TIME – paying full upgrade price up to and including FCP 5.0
    3. Did the Crossgrade

So which one do I buy – the 699 or the 499 — and why pay more for having paid more for years? Doesn’t make sense

    Andy

  • Walter,

Hmmm – I just bought the upgrade box at the apple store – wasn’t offered two different upgrades — just “the upgrade” no questions asked — think it was 499.00

Now I have my original verion FCP 1.0 and every disk and upgrade since then.

Does this mean my upgrade won’t work if I use the my first version serial number for the upgrade – haven’t taken this out of the box yet

What’s wrong with these guys? Punishing you for buying MORE of their products with a higher price?

April 19, 2007 at 11:55 pm in reply to: FCP 6 Any improvements in the Text Generator?

Agree – LiveType works fine – you can import clip into livetype to line up type effects…or rough it out bring into FCP – if it’s not right go back to Live Type – fix it – automatically updates in FCP

  • Had similar problems with FCP 5.0 Latest version of Tiger dual 2 gig tower….but only when I switch from AJA IOLA to DV Firewire and back….somehow it won’t see the video any more..trashing the preferences (Final cut prefs) usually does the trick without a box restart.

ALSO – anyone reporting any problems with AJA IO latest software update before I dive in and install? Thanks Andy Field

    March 10, 2006 at 9:20 pm in reply to: DVX-100 vs. DVX-100A vs. DVX-100B

one BIG difference between the 100a and 100B…. the 100B no longer allows interval recording….you can’t set the machine – set the timer and let it do timelaps over many hours or days.

Think they changed the tape drive in the B (improved it) but somehow that improvement eliminated the interval recording. That was one reason I picked the A over the B. Andy

December 6, 2005 at 12:56 pm in reply to: DVX100A Rebate – Where do you apply for it on line?

Actually I just found the “apply for rebate” section – and spoke with a dealer who said they received a notice saying the DVX100 rebate extends till December 30th

Here’s the link (after you go there – click on the phrase “$1,300 in Cash and Accessories”)
