I’m looking to purchase a camera for weddings, commercial productions, and eventually indie films. I want a camera that shoots 24P Advanced. I’ve researched and it seems the DVX line is the way to go. (Correct me if I’m wrong.) I just can’t decide which one to purchase. I’ve found a DVX-100 for 2500, used. I’ve found a DVX-100A for 2600, used. I’ve also looked at DVX-100B’s for around 3500, new. I know the 100A is improved over the the 100 and I figured that a 100 dollar increase is miniscule in the camera world. I cannot tell the difference between a 100B and 100A, besides the price! I believe the 100B has P2 slots. What are your recommendations?

Or should I forget DVX altogher and by Canon XL-2?

Or should I wait and save for an HD cam?

The inevitable questions of digital cameras.

Haw- no it does not have P2 slots. Here’s an article that explains what’s new:

one BIG difference between the 100a and 100B…. the 100B no longer allows interval recording….you can’t set the machine – set the timer and let it do timelaps over many hours or days.

Think they changed the tape drive in the B (improved it) but somehow that improvement eliminated the interval recording. That was one reason I picked the A over the B. Andy

    Andy –

I used the interval timer the very first day I got my DVX100A. Over the course of 3 weeks, I had the camera set up in my bedroom and shot 1.5 seconds of video every 10 minutes as my pond was being built. I then created a video entitled “How to Build a Pond in 5 Minutes”. I love this feature and hate to see it go. It would be one reason I would not consider going from my Panasonic DVX100A to the B version. While on the subject of improvements, I would still like to see the camera redesigned so one could have the battery in place and still be able to plug into AC – like Sony does with their cameras. That way, one could shoot using AC then quickly unplug the camera and go battery. This was one of the hardest things for me to adjust to when I moved from my Sony Digital 8. The camera though is awesome as you can see from some of the videos produced on the DVXuser.com forum.

    Have a great day.
