  • I do not know if the card will work, however, from a troubleshooting perspective, I would leave the BM Card out of the computer until you have determined whether or not the card will work.

If you follow the recommendations with the only difference being the UI card, you should easily determine if it’s going to work or not.

Sounds like something significant but there are so many things that could drop from successors to the EX line, to a 4K recorder to the FS700, to a professional EVF purpose built for the F3.

    Anyone’s guess.

Good time to be buying the GTX 580. You will see a number of online places selling the “Classifed” version of the 580 for under $500. Some have instant rebates going as well bringing the price down even further.

  • Hi Jon,

In case you haven’t read the Resolve 8 Configuration Guide for Windows, I have posted it here, as the Blackmagic site has been down (for me) over the weekend.

They are specific about the motherboard, the ASUS P9X79 Pro, and for good reason. It has 4 16 lane PCI slots which is very unusual for a motherboard. Lots of people have had problems with their windows boxes when they have had the lower end Blackmagic capture cards in the machine. The threads are here and some are within the past few weeks. If you are thinking about Thunderbolt, I would seriously drop the notion for a year or so, as the two boards that are being released are not fully implemented versions of it and more importantly the motherboards are not blessed by BM.

I would stick with the GTX 580 for the DaVinci processing card as it is a tried and true warrior with Resolve. If you are concerned about Premiere Pro, the Quadro 4000 is considered one of the better matches for this NLE. Unfortunately, between the two cards you will be spending a bit of money and you will need a beefy PSU, and possible two to divide up the load.

With the posted config guide, my suggestion is… read it carefully and then read it again. Your answers lie within.

    Hi Aaron,

I heard from enough people that the implementation of Open GL (CL) is still tentstive in PPro CS6 that I didn’t bother.

I’m going the PC route with a GTX 580 or equivalent.

  • Thanks guys for the info. Just saw the Magma page…

    https://www.magma.com/thunderbolt.asp

They claim 2 of the 3 slots have 8 lane data paths. No 16x yet which is a real bummer.

I would say after watching Alexis Van Hurkham’s demo of Resolve 9 that the development team still needs a month or so to get things ready for general release. It might even be longer but worth the wait I would add.

June 9, 2012 at 11:44 pm in reply to: New Mac Pros next week!

    Jan,

Agree with you 100%. I was on the verge of purchasing a custom built PC running 64 bit Windows 7 to run Resolve, Premiere Pro, etc after having been on Macs since ’89.

Threw in the towel with Apple last year with FCPX and their poor attitude towards the pro market.

I decided to wait until after WWDC before making the PC purchase just in case Apple pulls a rabbit out of their hat with Jobs gone.

This rumor announcement is a mixed blessing. It will have Thunderbolt and the new E5 Intel CPU by the sounds of it. It will outpace the other i7 PC boxes on the market unless they have dual CPUs in them. The specs are quite amazing. And maybe Apple will do a mea culpa to the pro market but maybe not.

Still not sure which way I am going to go but this coming week will be the true decision point.

Martin, that card makes total sense if you have a motherboard that has the slots arranged that you can afford to loose those slots hiding under the heatsink and fans.

What kind of computer or motherboard are you using with the Zoltac video card?

The ASUS P9X79 motherboard allows you to use slots 1 & 5 for the GPU (16 lane slots). Blackmagic states that the GTX 580 should go in slot 5 and the GUI card should go in slot 1. Unfortunately the Zoltac, if put in slot 5 would probably slam into the case. Not sure if you can swap the positions of the video cards in the slots and have things still work. Probably can but I am not going to spend 4 grand in computer parts to find out.

Does BlackMagic Design read these forums and jump in?

    Thanks for the reply Juan.

I presume you are happy with the card you are running. Do you know what clock speed your card is running at?
