    David,

You should be concerned. A TV station moving to FCP at this very moment is not a good idea and actually not possible unless you own copies of FCS for all of the seats you want to install on.

The new FCPX is a consumer app and is not remotely suited to a collaborative environment.

The best summary of all the gotchas and implications in this move from Apple can be found in Walter Biscardi and Richard Harrington’s audio broadcast from a couple of days ago. It is an hour and a half long but it is worth the time investment. It really is. You can find it here…

At NAB I queried individuals at the Blackmagic booth with leading questions to get a decent answer out of them. One said, “The hardware is finished, the software just needs a bit of polishing.” So when do you think it will hit the street, I said. “In about a month.” Are you sure. “Yeah, I think that is reasonable to get the few things done that need to be cleaned up.”

He was in the hardware division and obviously was positioned to say such things. The piece of gear was at work on the floor. I saw it running and he pointed to it as evidence that he wasn’t blowing smoke.

I still have seen no evidence in the channel. I meant to phone today but work got in the way.

Thanks Joshua for the replies (and to Bob for chiming in).

One final question about the UltraScope… Can you adjust the gain so those using color charts (DSC, Macbeth, etc) can get the vectorscope info in the vicinity of target range?

    Hi Jason,

I assume you mean a traditional mixer with buses, sends and then output to a set of monitors/speakers.

Do you have an audio interface, like one from MOTU or Presonus or the like? Sounds like you would be a candidate for one.

Audio interfaces generally run out of a firewire port, a few run out of a PCI slot. Most audio interfaces have balanced ins and outs as well as phantom powered mic preamps. Given you are using a mixer almost all in that situation would be running with an audio interface and possibly ditching the mixer as the audio interface can serve as a mixer as well in many instances.

  • Actually that rig does work. Philip Bloom on his blog refers to it as “the elcheapo” shoulder rig.

Of the midrange stuff I have found the “Media Rig” to be very good but it harness/rig makes you HIGHLY visible in a crowd. Cinevate makes an interesting shoulder rig that utilizes the Proteus Rails device that is gaining popularity. If you can hold your nose and drop lots of money the Zacuto Newsman package rig works really well with a EX1/EX3 and you can sport a Letus with it and simply adjust the over the shoulder counter balance and you’re in business. Any shoulder rig that takes your hand off the camera handle will require a remote zoom on the handle of the shoulder rig so factor that in when you are making your decision.

On a strictly theoretical level, I would lean towards SP 1080/60i on the EX3 as this is closest to the Z1U but and this is a big but since you are doing potentially fast moving stuff to experiment with shooting in HQ 1080/60i on the EX3. You will probably get fewer artifacts and they still could match up quite well. The key is 1080/60i. The big question is whether to use HP or SP mode.

January 11, 2009 at 6:48 am in reply to: kata cc 197/195 bag for EX-3

The CC-197 will definately accept the Trolly. The bag will run vertically which is good. The 197 is significantly longer than the 195 allowing you a lot more room for accessories, batteries, mics, windsocks, mattboxes, rails, etc. It is a bit higher as well.

The one concern some have who have the 197 is getting it onto airplanes as a carry-on. Most who have it have NOT had a problem. But the size of the bag will alarm you when you first see it.

I have the 197 and like it a lot because of the extra room as well as the protective wire cage inside it.

If you poke around the other forums on relating to the EX3 you will find a lot of posts on people’s likes and dislikes of the 195 and 197 Kata bag

December 17, 2008 at 5:18 pm in reply to: EX3 Firmware update?

Someone who posted in another forum having repair work done by Sony was told a firmware update should be available (from Japan) within a few days placing the release around December 19th.

No word from the Sony indiviudal on whether or not the upgrade will be user serviceable or not.

Good question as zebras are often assignable. On the EX series from what I can tell “Zebra 2” is fixed at 100 so you have a reference to keep the highlights in check. and Zebra 1 is floating/adjustable. I set mine to 70 IRE for flesh tones based on sage wisdom from a DP I know who dispenses kernels of wisdom from time to time. 75 IRE may be better on newer/HD cameras. I haven’t questioned it (till now).

December 10, 2008 at 4:17 am in reply to: Add EX-3 or second EX-1?

I feel strongly David got it right in summary. This the big focus between the two. In terms of immediate benefit I would say interchangable lenses is a biggie and not just using expensive Fujinon or Sony lenses but you can also throw on 35mm lenses once you have the adapter. I’m not talking about Letus’s and Brevis’s with a 35mm lens in front but standard lenses with simple lens mount adapter. The only caveat is the lens focal length is multiplied 5.5 times so a 50mm Nikon lens effectively becomes a 550mm lens and so on. There are 2 places you can get the lens mount adapters from. Mike Tapa is the one that I used. The level of flexibility this adds is significant.

The quality of the EX3 viewfinder shouldn’t be underplayed. You can buy the HoodPro “sock” device (which I use on my Z1) on the EX1 but in a production environment, if I had the choice I would go for the EX3 viewfinder, if I had it at my disposal.

Access to pro timecode/genlock factored into my purchase. I am not using it now but don’t want to be put in a situation of loosing a good gig because my cam doesn’t play nice with more expensive cameras in a shoot.

When you look at the cost of all the other gear surrounding the camera the difference in the price is moot (to me). The advantages of the EX3 are worth way more than the price difference and you already have an EX1 so if you need portability and a small cam to get on a plane you are set. You also have the cam that works with the less expensive Steadicam and the other goodies available. I would think the EX3 would be a good piece for your arsenal.
