GTX 580 the overclocked one or not
I see from all the Resolve forum threads on the GTX 580, that it is the one to get at the moment.
There are several versions of the 3GB GTX 580 available running different clock speeds.
Price isn’t the issue with me. I am more concerned about stability, speed and noise. I will be running this in a Windows based Resolve machine. Any recommendations on the GTX 580 cards listed below?
There is the “Classified” version that is factory overclocked at 900 MHz; there is the “Classified” running at 855 MHz, and there is the one running at 772 MHz.

For stability & noise slower is better.
The power requirements for the classified edition are also quite a bit heavier.

It’s the standard gtx580 3gb. But that decision was made more for power considerations in the MacPro, rather than a performance consideration. Not sure which I’d recommend for pc.

I believe factory based oc version is also stable.

We have an HP Z800 with the std 580 card and it works fine. Very stable.
But we had to manually add in enough power sockets so i wouldn’t push the power.Pat Horridge

Hi,
I have an overclocked Zotac 580 AMP2 3GB,
The Fans are realy quiet and I have no stability issues…
I´m running it since september 2011 doing 30-120min ARRI-ALEXA-dailies every workday with 25-28fps…
One of the best if not THE BEST 580…
The only drawback is, it´s a 3-slot card, but fast and quiet as hell.
Just be sure you use the proper driver-version 280.26. I learned it the hard way last week…Maybe it helps.

Martin, that card makes total sense if you have a motherboard that has the slots arranged that you can afford to loose those slots hiding under the heatsink and fans.
What kind of computer or motherboard are you using with the Zoltac video card?
The ASUS P9X79 motherboard allows you to use slots 1 & 5 for the GPU (16 lane slots). Blackmagic states that the GTX 580 should go in slot 5 and the GUI card should go in slot 1. Unfortunately the Zoltac, if put in slot 5 would probably slam into the case. Not sure if you can swap the positions of the video cards in the slots and have things still work. Probably can but I am not going to spend 4 grand in computer parts to find out.
Does BlackMagic Design read these forums and jump in?

Was the best choice last summer…
I´m not using a gui card. You get a warning message at startup, but I don´t care.
During Fullscreen-Playback I switch-off parade-display, else you get some slowdown…
As mentioned, I still get more than realtime-performance. (26-29fps) with Arri Alexa-4:4:4-Footage), loosing about 1fps per node (with blurs, etc…)Kind Regards
