    Hi guys

Just building a PC for Avid and Resolve. The Avid is using the Quadro 4000 card, so I’m planning to add a GTX580 for Resolve CUDA power.

Since I work exclusively in 1080 HD, do I in fact need the 3gb version, or would the 1.5gb work just as well?

    Thanks all

Do you work with higher than hd sources? Red, f65, etc. plan to in the future? Would like to be able to in the future? If the answer to any is yes, then yeah you need the 3gb version.

As per my post, it’s all 1080 for now. Above HD does the smaller memory card not work, or just not render as quickly?

Doesn’t work reliably. Issues come up with just higher than hd sources. Even if you’re only rendering to hd if you are using r3d or the like, you may have issues. Would recommend getting 3gb card in most cases.

Same here, you are buying something new, make it stick for a while.

Understood, thanks guys – just came across a 1.5 at a great price, so was tempted. But it is quite possible I’ll end up with BMD camera rushes, so if even they could be an issue it’s not worth the risk.

I assume though that the difference between the various 3gb cards is pretty marginal though?

Good time to be buying the GTX 580. You will see a number of online places selling the “Classifed” version of the 580 for under $500. Some have instant rebates going as well bringing the price down even further.
