October 22, 2011 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Compositing workflow and multiple footage formatsHey Guillem!
Thank you for the reply it helps a lot and confirms what I suggested to the director – that I pass off graded plates for the vfx guy to comp material back into! It seems I might just get those shots already comped with material so we’ll see how that goes i guess but I will recommend your suggestions for workflow.
cheers

October 19, 2011 at 8:06 pm in reply to: ARRI FCP workflow – LUT’s & converting .ari sequences to .dpx?!Ok I am trying to give this a go! So here are the steps I have taken thus far:
1. I load all of the Arri raw footage into my media pool
2. Not using a LUT anymore so its just going to need to be log-c (flat) dpx sequences at the original size which is (2880×1620). Is this a limitation to Lite?
3) GT120 warnings / crashes 🙂 I am beginning to realize my MacPro 4,1 with just a 120 card is not even going to be able to do this.If in fact I just need to make 3K dpx sequences from the Arri raw then maybe Davinci is not my tool for this? I am still curious to give it a go in Davinci Lite if that is possible. I have provided a screen grab to show how I cant go above 1920×1080 – i assume that is a resolution limitation of this lite version?

October 19, 2011 at 4:40 pm in reply to: ARRI FCP workflow – LUT’s & converting .ari sequences to .dpx?!Is there any way someone at BMD can walk me thru this? I am a Resolve owner and brand new user but at the freelance job I am at today I am trying to use the Lite version to do these conversions to dpx.
I got as far as adding all of the folders of .ari sequences into the media pool but exporting out 3K dpx with a LUT is beyond my comprehension!
thanks in advance

October 19, 2011 at 12:52 am in reply to: ARRI FCP workflow – LUT’s & converting .ari sequences to .dpx?!Hey Peter,
thanks so much for the fast response!
Just out of curiosity how best would I do this without worrying about xml and my actual edit – if I just want to convert all of the footage to dpq sequences.I think I will ultimately want to use the method you describe but in terms of step by step how to and the time involved unless someone lays it out and its straight forward it might be more trouble? For example one thing I am noticing is that the naming convention of the .arri files is longer than the ProRes transcodes – i wonder what/how this might effect xml workflow.
any help would be really helpful and thank you so much for writing back!
cheers

Hi Oliver
I am in a bit of an emergency situation on a Arri job – I have been editing with ProRes files that are from an Arri shoot (no LUT applied yet so totally flat) I have not only the transcoded ProRes files which I have been editing with, but I also have the .ari sequences which will need the LUT applied and also converted to dpx sequences for vfx pipeline. A few .cube and 1 .cdl file were included in a LUT folder but beyond that I am not familiar with how to apply the LUT to the ProRes footage I am editing in FCP, as well as applying it to the arri sequences which will also need to be converted to dpq. I have access to Color & Davinci Resolve on Mac – as well as AE of course but I need to know what tools & workflow makes the most sense in that I am using FCP – would a GlueTools plugin be able to take the LUT and convert to dpq out of FCP?I have just purchased Nick Shaw’s plugin to have an estimate of the LUT provided on set so thanks for that info, but I will of course need to apply the LUT given to us and apply that to not only the ProRes footage I am editing with BUT also to the .ari sequences while converting to DPX – any help would be greatly appreciated as its super time sensitive that I accomplish all of this.
thank you

Hey Peter thank you for the reply!
So just curious as to whether I can move all my training projects and put them into a database and make another database for paid work / non-training projects and move those into there proper category? If so exactly how would I do this moving / organizing of these projects I have already created and worked on?
cheers

Where might I find the procedure for updating properly from 8.0.1 to 8.1?
I just downloaded and installed, then restarted – it asked to update decklink as well and restart and now when i launch resolve i am a little confused – i of course want to backup the projects / database i already have as well as restore everything so i get it all back.
a link to a thread or BMD procedure protocol would be great OR if someone can just tell me 🙂
thank you!

Hey Sacha thank you for the reply,
Just a little confused here by your response…I am coming from the FCP & Color world and still trying to wrap my head around Davinci.
“One database per project, one project per reel, one timeline per edit”.
So i have my user I created and then I have a whole list of projects in the Project List area which I have created (mostly just fxphd classes and a couple test ones attempting fcp xml round trips…can you possibly explain in newbie terms what you mean exactly I am so sorry i feel learning disabled right now – ha!
I wish I could just create a folder and put all the DAV101 class projects I created into that, and then the DAV202 projects into its own folder, FastForward into its, etc. coming from FCP & Color the whole database / reel thing is new to me and I want to get it right!
thank you

I cant help but wonder now about the fact that Resolve is a YUV based grading app as opposed to Color which is RGB – when using the Dreamcolor which is RGB progressive i believe how does this effect things?
I am using the Dreamcolor which is getting a DisplayPort signal from the HDlink3D which is receiving SDI from my Decklink Extreme 3D – now that its been probed along with the Panny Plasma is there a flaw in my setup?
any info would be great – especially from an BMD peeps who might read this in that the Dreamcolor is a widely used monitoring solution.

“run the calibration software” can you explain? I dont have the little probe they sell for the dreamcolor if that is what you mean?
thank you for the response!
