Alternative, use Sony Catalyst – it is free and will allow you to transcode to XAVC-HD which Avid supports.
    AP.

  • In the event of a failed component, then yes you can just replace it.
I was thinking more in terms of when the product is EOL or they stop making drivers for your OS the RAID card becomes useless.
Using either an external RAID (with its own controller) which connects via common SAS or Fibre channel or a NAS (preferably) somewhat alleviates that problem.
I know I have storage that far outlived the host computer and or operating system lifetime.

  • There is no way I would rely on an (proprietary) internal RAID card with a JBOD,
if anything happens to the card then the chance of your data being toast is high.
Much easier just to get a NAS, QNAP, Synology etc – they have much greater flexibility and compatibility.

DAS makes sense for a backup/migration system,
Might be worth checking out the new QNAP thunderbolt units, they offer ethernet/10g as well in the same system.

  • Why not just setup a 200TB NAS as nearline (for hires media),
then use your ISIS for offline (DNxHD36), when you’re edit is locked, upres/conform to your originals.

Any reason to go for Thunderbolt connectivity?
I would look at doing iscsi using SNS GlobalSAN client – this would open up a lot more choice in storage systems, for example the new G-tech rack 12 or even SNS own storage.

I would check out Archiware P5, as it supports tape libraries:
    https://www.archiware.com/p5-archive.303.1.html

  • Two things,
your media folder names do not look correct – each should be computer name then ending in sequential number.
    eg
    machine.1
    machine.2
(a new folder is created each time Avid reaches the limit of 5000 files)

Secondly as you arent working from Avid storage you need to enable alldrives in console, this will allow Avid MC to read media from network drives.

Once you have done that, delete the two database files mdb & pmr whilst no one is accessing the media and your machine will rescan and create them.

“I haven’t tried with LTFS much, but I’m guessing there’s a performance penalty for a large number of small files over a small number of large files.”

That’s correct, LTFS and tape is really bad at handling small files.
Best solution is to TAR the folder first, then write the package to tape.
