Netstor has the 16 bay and 24 bay that require the ARC-1883ix-16 or ARC-1883ix-24

Maxx Digital has the EVO 16 bay with direct thunderbolt 2 connection.

Highpoint WILL have a 16 bay, but it will be thunderbolt 3

and yes, with 10TB drives, a G-Tech Studio XL will have 80 TB

So it looks like the rack mount ones from Netstor or Maxx are the only viable ones.
Any idea if the Netstor NA333 16-bay will work with 8TB drives? I couldn’t find any documentation on this at their site.

Any reason to go for Thunderbolt connectivity?
I would look at doing iscsi using SNS GlobalSAN client – this would open up a lot more choice in storage systems, for example the new G-tech rack 12 or even SNS own storage.

The application my client has in mind is to have a large off-site RAID storage to backup camera files and other exported media to be available online at the new location. About 50 TB is their projection of what they would need in about a year’s worth of shoot. So, knowing that these estimates are often off, I’ve doubled it. They want to be able to plug in their MacBook Pro and copy off drives on to this big RAID. Sharing is not essential hence a NAS kind of setup is not being considered.

So its really a choice between a Thunderbolt storage or a SAS storage. For SAS they would need to provide a Thunderbolt-PCIe box with a SAS card inside it anyway, hence Thunderbolt to reduce the complexity. LTO was considered but the backup data needs to be ‘live’ and they want to avoid having to read off tapes.

DAS makes sense for a backup/migration system,
Might be worth checking out the new QNAP thunderbolt units, they offer ethernet/10g as well in the same system.

If it’s off-site work, you should look at the 80TB G-Tech G-Speed Shuttle XL which is also available in a custom Peli case.

Yes the G-Speed XL 80 TB looks like an interesting option. It would be 60 TB as RAID6.

BTW, the Netstor NA333 16-bay RAID enclosure can take up to 6 TB drives according to a vendor I contacted. So that would make it 96TB raw or 84 TB as RAID6.
