    A) You should really be doing a clean wipe and install of Lion from SL and then a brand new install of MC6.
    B) Your IT dept should know this.

Yeah it works just transocoding on export to AAF. I would choose the option which places all your footage in a folder next to the AAF rather then embed it in the file itself. I have never had a problem this way, but have run into several with embedded ones. And OMFs are fine if your seuqences are short but have a file size limit.

  • Just because your native media has a low bitrate does not mean that you should necessarily transfer to a low bitrate codec for editing (especially if the media you create is going to be used in your final output). You will still loose more data by recompressing to a low bitrate DNxHD codec than a higher one. Your only considerations should be how much drive space you can afford for the project and how good the footage needs to look at the end (ie where will it be delivered?). If you are short on space but want good quality footage because it will be broadcast or shown on good screens and not just on the web, then you should think about an online/offline workflow. Transcode all the footage to 36, make your edit and then relink the sequence back to the AVCHD footage, then export from that or transcode just the sequence to a higher bitrate.

  • And whilst extend edit will do a dual roller trim (roll in FCP language) use Top or Tail will do a ripple trim.

  • Find the original AMA Master Clip.

Transcode it to whatever res you want.

Now find the offline transcoded master clips -.new(new.01) and relink it, pointing at the drive that media is on. If the media created in step two matches the source file and timedode then it will relink and any sequences referencing it will update.

  • Not heard of this problem before, but have found that most Audio Post guys like to strip away all of my audio work before starting.

  • Just select your dailies and transcode them to whatver Avid codec you would like and they will become MXFs. Once created you can relink your sequence to them very easily.

I would say the AMA workflwo is a little easier to operate than the RedCineX if your used to Avid. I used it for a Red One feature last year. I AMAd the footage into Avid, transcoded to DNxHD36 for the offline then relinked back to the RAW footage for the online. At this stage you have two options; 1) Send the seqeunce to a program that can grade r3d files at full (or higher than HD res) 2) Transcode the sequence back the DHxHD but at a higher bitrate and then grade in Avid or in another programme at HD.

If you’re going for the second option, you need to play with the source settings for every clip to get a good starting point for grading. RedLog is really a must if you want to preserve all the detail that the camera captures.

The only real benefits of RecCine are that you can install it on anathoer machine that you do not have Avid on, and it will do better with corrupt clips.

If your school is an Avid Learning Partner they should just send you them. And all I meant was that a good teacher would use these as an aid to his explanation of these subjects, not a replacement.

We have a shed load of these up at the college I work at sometimes. There are so many questions that if I get asked, I can just point at the poster and carry on with my lesson.

Not that I would ever do that, cause I’m a good teacher. 😉
