  • Any way to stop the playhead from moving in trim mode?

I’m another recent FCP to Avid convert, and for the most part have been really enjoying the change but there’s simple little things that seem to slow me down while getting used to the new NLE. Right now my biggest issue is that when I’m trimming the playhead moves from where I parked it and lines up with my trim roller. I edit a lot of montage style edits to music and I’m really used to doing trims in FCP where I’ll park my playhead on a beat in the song and then trim the end of clip to the playhead. Obviously this isn’t working since every time I trim something the playhead moves from where I parked it. Is there anyway to change this behavior? Thanks in advance for your help.

Instead of trimming just use Extend Edit. I believe it defaults to P (or I used to always map it to P, can’t remember which). So park your playhead, activate the track you want trim to that point, and hit Extend Edit. It will trim to your playhead and leave your playhead in place.

And whilst extend edit will do a dual roller trim (roll in FCP language) use Top or Tail will do a ripple trim.

Or mark an In or Out, (or use a Marker) and trim to that
