Does it need to to the analysis of the audio in order for the sync to work? I though the analysis was just for denoising etc.

No worries Dan. It’s often difficult to find the time to train yourself on new software features when you have deadlines to meet. Glad I could help.

This is called an Overwrite trim and is a new feature in 5 as part of the smart tool. If you trim in the direction of the other shot it will overwrite into it, if you trim away, it will leave a gap. Personally I can’t stand it and for the sparse occasions I needed to remove some footage and leave a gap Alt and Single roller trim did this fine. Anyway, this should only happen if you have the smart tool active and click on the left or right of a cut point, in the bottom section of the clip, and drag in order to perform your trim. If you enter traditional trim mode and click on the A or B image, then your should be in Ripple trim (which is exactly the same as a single roller trim but now yellow rather than red). Try just turning the smart tool off if you are having trouble.

I would be loathed to even push in to 110 on HD footage for theatrical release. But this is really a matter of opinion rather than fact.

You need to master trim mode. It is probably my favourite thing about Avid and if you can get fast with it, you will love it. With the smart tool you can access trimming without having to enter trim mode now, if you prefer to do stuff with the mouse. Clicking in the middle of the cut with the smart tool on will give you a dual roller trim which works exactly the same as the roll tool in FCP. Clicking just to the left or right will give you a single roller trim which works like the ripple tool in FCP. Depending on weather you put your mouse at the top of clip or the bottom you will get two types of single roller trim, Ripple Trim (yellow) or Overwrite Trim (red). The Ripple trim will push or pull all later shots up and down the timeline as you add or remove. The Overwrite trim will remove media and leave a gap if you drag it one way or overwrite the next or previous clip (just like an dual roller trim would) if you drag it the other. If you don’t like the smart tool you can try the traditional trim mode (U to enter it) which is the same but does not have an overwrite trim.

Then with a little manual adjustment you can get everything up against each other. When you’re don go to Toolset -> Save Current and it will store it in your user settings.

I did a whole feature that would have been a million times easier with this and then found out about it. Was very annoying.

Does the NanoFlash create the files in the typical XDCAM folder architecture (BPAV)? If so, you want to be linking to an AMA Volume and point to the BPAV folder for each card, rather than the MXF files themselves. This will bring in spanned clips as a single master clip (although it still keeps the media files in seperate chunks when you consolidate/transcode.
